A NIGHT IN SUPPORT OF THE COMMITTEE TO PROTECT JOURNALISTS
I hope you’ll join me on November 19th for a night in support of the Committee To Protect Journalists at the Russian Samovar restaurant in New York. We will celebrate this year’s release of journalists Evan Gershkovich and Alsu Kurmasheva, hear the latest on other unjustly detained journalists and learn more about the work of the Committee To Protect Journalists. It’s a privilege to host the event. I hope you will join us.

JOHN HODGMAN, Part 2
Seriously Funny
John Hodgman always makes me laugh, in his books, on his podcast and certainly during his long run on The Daily Show. John makes me laugh in interviews as well, but he is also an extremely thoughtful interview, especially about his many and varied influences and how they melded together into the career he’s fashioned.
Besides, you have to love any guy who was voted in 8th grade “most likely to become the editor of The New Yorker.”

JOHN HODGMAN, Part 1
Seriously Funny
John Hodgman has made a wonderful career out of telling us things that are not true: as the “Resident Expert” and then “Deranged Millionaire” on The Daily Show and the author of three fun books of fake trivia. His warm and clever wit are on display each week on the podcast Judge John Hodgman. He is a thoughtful and compelling interview, especially when discussing his early influences, including the TV show Dr. Who, the writer Jorge Luis Borges and a Peter Cook/Dudley Moore comedy bit that “reshaped” his brain.
It all started in a Brookline, Massachusetts home where his parents allowed his creative side to flourish, And it never stopped.

Kenny Vance
Kenny Vance is one of my favorite interviews. He's a Brooklyn guy through and through. He's a musical lifer, a founding member of Jay and the Americans. And he has put his heart and soul and love into a beautiful documentary about early doo w*p groups, as Kenny puts it, the unsung heroes of rock 'n roll. The film is called Heart & Soul. It's played on numerous PBS stations and you can see it online. It was a pleasure and privilege to host a post screening Q&A with Kenny at Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan in July and I just learned that it is available to watch on the Heart and Soul website.
Enjoy. And go see Heart and Soul.

A Series Of Fortunate Events
Barry Sonnenfeld is a storyteller. In film. And in conversation. His journey has taken him from the streets of Washington Heights to the heights of Hollywood. He tells hundreds of these stories in a new memoir, "Best Possible Place, Worst Possible Time.” He shared more than a few of them in our conversation.

HARRY TEINOWITZ
Getting Another Shot
Talk to Harry Teinowitz for ten seconds and it’s easy to understand why he’s had a successful career in Chicago sports talk radio. There’s a fun gift of gab, a solid sense of humor and a passionate love of sports. He's brought a lot of joy to Chicago sports fans. But then came a DUI, rehab and a coming to terms with his alcohol problem. The result? A play called “Another Shot” that is opening off Broadway at the Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre in New York this fall. Where once he provided laughs to his audience, now he’s providing hope. And a few laughs too.

BEN MANKIEWICZ
For The Love Of Family And Films
Many of us grow up in homes with high expectations, but perhaps not the burden of expectation that Ben Mankiewicz experienced. His grandfather and great uncle were prominent in Hollywood, his father in the world of politics. Ben long ago dreamed of being a baseball broadcaster. Along the way, he worked in sports media, hosted a news broadcast in Miami and eventually moved to California where he went on scores of auditions and batted .000. But much like in his beloved baseball, it only takes one. At the audition for Turner Classic Movies (TCM) in 2003, Mankiewicz hit it out of the park. More than 20 years later, generations of classic movie fans are glad he did.

JD SOUTHER
Woke up to this profoundly sad news of the death of JD Souther. An amazing songwriter and musician. He'll best be remembered for the songs he wrote that everybody knows. "New Kid In Town." "Best Of My Love." But his songs as a solo artist were just as great. "Faithless Love." "Prisoner In Disguise." "White Rhythm And Blues." And so many more.
I'm not saying that the music of JD Souther was the main reason why I met and fell in love with Peri Smilow at The Bottom Line on November 7, 1987 as we listened to JD and Karla Bonoff. But it didn't hurt.
Thanks JD. For elating me during the good times and sustaining me during the hard ones.

From Ticket Taker To Critic To Producer
You never know what job you have that will teach you lessons that you’ll use decades later. Growing up as a theater loving kid, Frank Rich got a dream job as a ticket taker in a theater in his hometown of Washington, D.C. And he watched as shows were changed, rewritten, shortened and lengthened from night to night in preparation for Broadway. What he observed and the lessons he learned served him well later as the New York Times drama critic and much later as an executive producer on the HBO series Veep and Succession.

JOHN PERRY
Everyone has a September 11th story that is particularly close to the heart. This is mine. The story of John Perry: NYPD officer, lawyer, NYCLU board member, learner of languages, occasional cameo actor. John Perry, who was giving up his badge that morning at 1 Police Plaza to pursue a career as a lawyer. And then the first plane hit.
His story must continue to be told.

LEN ELMORE
Balancing The Books And Ball
For much of his adult life as an athlete and attorney, Len Elmore has balanced academics and athletics. That work continues to this day as a Senior Lecturer at Columbia University in the Sports Management program. The balancing act began long ago growing up in New York City, then attending Power Memorial Academy, the University of Maryland, playing in the NBA, going to Harvard Law School, serving as an Assistant District Attorney in Brooklyn and beyond.
We are wowed by the big time nature of college sports and the gaudy salaries of the pros, where careers on average tend to be short. The lessons learned by balancing academics and athletics last a lifetime.

One of our greatest sports icons, Jerry West, died in June. Jerry West was an amazing basketball player and executive. But that's only a part of the story. The title of his memoir, "West by West: My Charmed, Tormented Life" perfectly captures a fascinating life, a life affected by an abusive father and the death of Jerry West's hero, his older brother, in combat in Korea.
I've been blessed in my career. And I was certainly blessed to share the stage with Jerry West at the 92nd Street Y on a night in 2011. It's a night I'll never forget.

LUCY KAPLANSKY
Art + Science = Sweet Music
We’ve all come to crossroads in our lives and our careers. Lucy Kaplansky initially chose music. Then she chose school and a doctorate in clinical psychology. She tried pursuing both passions, psychologist by day with a little music on the side. But then came those crossroads. Her many admirers are thankful that she chose a life in music. Years ago she affected lives with her work as a therapist. Now she’s affecting lives with her songs.

I'm blessed to work at two iconic New York radio stations. 1010 WINS and WCBS Newsradio 880, both owned by Audacy.
Growing up in upstate New York, we got WCBS loud and clear because of a killer signal. Coming out of college in 1981, I was flailing, trying to create a career in broadcasting and failing miserably. But I would listen to WCBS. Charles Osgood. Rita Sands. Ben Farnsworth. And they taught me how to write, how to broadcast, how to connect with an audience. I learned by listening. Fast forward to 2022 and suddenly I was on WCBS in addition to 1010 WINS. And for the past two years, I've loved every minute of it, working with consummate professionals, good colleagues and friends.
We got word yesterday that WCBS Newsradio 880 will soon cease to exist and the call letters will be retired. It is a profoundly sad time because of the loss of a New York radio station with institutional knowledge and because of the loss of so many jobs of colleagues and friends. I wish them all good things in their next chapters. The kindness they've shown me will never be forgotten. Nor will WCBS Newsradio 880.
A joy to do this interview on WCBS Newsradio 880 with Toni Pappas, a sweet story at a dark time. Yet another reminder of the time long ago when I rubbed out all of the names on my brother's baseball. Noticing my crime and my impending doom, I then tried to rewrite them in my 8 year old handwriting. My brother's baseball had been signed by all of the 1961 New York Yankees
