Pharaway Downs Honey
Pharaway Downs is a family farm located in Mango Hill. What once was a 120 acre potato farm is now a small few acres producing honey for the local community.
With family ties to farming being so strong, we wanted to continue the tradition in a small way.
One of our hives swarmed and needed to be rescued. They were extremely gentle and let us handle them into a new hive. We didn't spot the Queen unfortunately but seeing as the bees were all heading into the hive we are confident that she was successfully moved.
New season Raw Honey & Comb for sale. Harvested this week directly from the hives. Not processed or treated in any way. Message me if interested 🐝
This is a great frame that shows all that bees fill a frame with:
■ On the left is lots of pollen. Which is a rich source of protein and is an ingredient in royal jelly.
■Then to the right is capped Brood with bees about to hatch.
■Middle/Bottom right is Drone brood which are eggs laid by worker bees and will only produce males
■Top right is capped honey.
Checked our nucs today and all were successful in making new queen cells. In the next 12-14 days these new Queens will hatch and be the beginning of a new colony.
This is a grub in a queen cell. The bees will feed her only royal jelly for her 16 days of incubation. Then a new Queen will emerge.
When there isn't enough room in the hive the girls start to create comb in any spaces they can find. This is the natural shape and flow of comb when they aren't guided into the frames.
1st harvest of the Spring & we've gotten over 16L from the girls. They were full of honey & bees so will need to make some nucs this year so there are no swarms.

All our girls are doing exceptionally well this winter. Normally we wouldn't harvest this time of year but they are busting at the seams with honey. 🐝
It was a beautiful day hanging out with our bees. We didnt harvest much due to all the rain we've had but It was nice to see all the girls are healthy and thriving.
Spent some time today harvesting and inspecting our hives. As you can see when bees are left to make comb on their own they do not follow any straight lines.
