Hindemith bassoon sonata

A beautiful piece I've only recently started, and will be playing for my end of term assessment in a few weeks - wish me luck!

Yes I know it's been a while, I'm sorry!
This is one of my newer pieces, which I may well be performing for my end of year recital along with another couple of pieces and the first two movements of this work, which is quite frankly a beast to figure out, especially the Valse...

Vivaldi Concerto in D Minor

Yay for new music... I guess šŸ˜…

This third movement is really a pain, and this is probably closer to half speed than full speed. These octave and tenth jumps especially are just plain difficult to bring out, just because of the change in register, let alone the speed...

Vivaldi Bassoon Concerto in D Major

Yay new rep at long last, it feels like I've been doing the same pieces for years! Within two weeks of starting this piece, my teacher has already requested that I play it for my performance class next Tuesday, along with the second movement, which I haven't done with the piano as of yet. Haven't had to wing a performance yet, but it looks like I'm going to have to...

Milde Concert Study no.8

The green hair was a very good mistake I do believe

I know it's been a while since I last posted - I wasn't getting any videos I felt we're good enough to post, which is really a bit stupid considering this is supposed to be a record of my progress through music college, and this is definitely not a perfect take by any means.

Elgarā€™s Romance for Bassoon

Fun fact: Elgar composed this piece for the first bassoonist of the London Symphony orchestra who was at the time Edwin James, and played the second bassoon part in the orchestra himself.

Ermanno Wolf-Ferrariā€™s suite-concertino in F, second movement (Strimpellata)

Last time I played this was in a local music festival about 6 years ago, and my reed fell off about halfway through, so Iā€™d definitely say this was an improvement on that performance...

Weissenborn bassoon study 29

I promise I meant to post this ages ago and just forgot to, so I do apologise aha. This piece was just for fun because I was starting to get bored and wanted to liven things up a bit.

Besozzi Sonata in B flat Major (adagio)

A bit of an easier, calmer piece for a change, the fast notes were starting to get to me

17/04/2020

C minor scale study from Weissenborn book 1

Iā€™m now just getting bored of lockdown so Iā€™ll try a new one of these each day for the fun of it aha

Weissenborn F # minor scale study

felt bored so I dug this old book out, and I played it so little that it still looks good as new aha

Alexandre Tansmanā€™s sonatine for bassoon

So Iā€™m not such a fan of more modern classical in general, but I played the second movement of this piece a few years ago and it became my go to for a while, so Iā€™m trying to learn the whole piece so I have a full sonatine to play rather than picking movements from several and playing a hodgepodge repertoire.

Alexandre Tansmanā€™s bassoon Sonatine (Aria)

I learned this piece for I think my grade 6 exam and really loved it. Itā€™s a complete contrast to the two movement either side of it in that it doesnā€™t have insane leaps and annoying finger changes and can have so much emotion put into every note leading up to and away from the peak in the middle of the movement.

Mozart sonata in Bb

The second of four pieces Iā€™m learning for fun, little bit more traditional bassoon

Mozart Bassoon sonata in Bb

Lockdowns got me bored so Iā€™m back again. My teacher recommended that I move off my exam pieces for a while so I donā€™t get bored doing the same thing over and over so Iā€™ve started this piece among 3 others, which I will probably post clips of soon

Weissenborn study no. 35

Stuck indoors is not the place to be - Iā€™ve run out of stuff to do already... My grade 8 exam was supposed to be this Friday, obviously thatā€™s cancelled so Iā€™m dropping one of the exam pieces (Milde 7) and learning a different one for when I do eventually (hopefully) get to my exam. Just useful that Iā€™ve already fallen in love with this piece - so much expression is written out on the page, I canā€™t wait to get the hang of the notes and put the right effects across

26/02/2020

Mozart Bassoon Concerto in Bb, first movement

I know Iā€™ve posted this piece a lot but I do really like it, and itā€™s in my exam in a month so I donā€™t exactly have a choice šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

Coram Charity concert from last night - playing W. Boyceā€™s symphony no.3 in C Major (Vivace)

This being my second performance at St. Andrews, I had an amazing time - the room was perfect for the music we were playing, played a phenomenal Purcell trumpet sonata, and we had some actors telling the story of a child who was involved with the charity way back during Queen Victoriaā€™s reign - a lot more interesting than it sounds

Very well done to everyone!

Mozart bassoon concerto in Bb, first movement.

I have less than 2 months before my grade 8 exam, and havenā€™t looked at this piece in weeks - Iā€™m so screwed šŸ˜«

Really gotta stop rushing through the rests as well, itā€™s not a good habit...

Happy Christmas/holidays/whatever you celebrate! Itā€™s been a good lazy weekend and havenā€™t had much time to practice... or the energy...

Iā€™m gonna get back into the swing of things soon, I think, so keep an eye out for new posts soon šŸ˜šŸ˜

George Gershwinā€™s Summertime, arranged for bassoon and piano by John Alley
-
-
This is one of those pieces youā€™re given by a family member who doesnā€™t know how difficult high notes are... nearly every note is above middle C or at least in Tenor clef (there are two copies of the bassoon part - one of which uses treble clef which is just demonic)

I was given the book probably 3 or 4 years ago, when I could barely play a top G in tune, let alone B flats and Ds, and Iā€™ve just had it sat on a shelf for a long time. I pulled it out a couple days ago and thought ā€œhey I could actually play this nowā€ and then realised nope because how the heck is a top E flat a note?!

With auditions out the way I can finally start learning new pieces and mucking around with old ones! I started this movement back in the summer, before Iā€™d settled on what pieces to play, and definitely loved it - just some little bits that I couldnā€™t and still canā€™t get my fingers around (for example, the second video) - but I love it none the less!

Please excuse the slightly dodgy sound and technique, I havenā€™t practiced as much as I shouldā€™ve šŸ˜…

Finally a post with accompaniment...
At last I am done with auditions and I can stop for this term, itā€™s all out of my hands now.

In this recording I was using the first successful reed Iā€™ve ever made, so excuse the unresponsive low notes and strained height notes...
