Poppa Pickett Speedrunning

ANNOUNCEMENT

I will be participating in my first speedrun marathon to benefit Julie's Fight. All donations will be used to help a friend of a speedrun.com mod who is suffering from metastatic ovarian cancer. The marathon will take place from December 18th to the 21st.

I will be speedrunning Diablo 3 (New Game, Console, Any%, Monk) on PS4 and Karate Champ on NES.

The event will be live streamed on the ResortFest Twitch channel (link to come) and I'll be live on my YouTube channel.

The schedule will be dropping soon. I'll put the dates and times up along with the other appropriate links when they are available to me. If anything, I'm hoping to bring a little attention to the cause. I know it's rough with it being so close to the holiday, but if you can donate, it will be greatly appreciated. On Sunday 11/15, I'll be streaming with the guys from Dude, Where's My Challenge! We'll be playing Among Us with some of their fans. It'll be at 2pm est (because, you know, time zones) and after it wraps, I'll go right into my normal speedrunning content. I know some of you know these guys and you know there's gonna be some shenanigans! This is one you're not gonna wanna miss!

This is gonna be a "Real Moment". It's gonna be long. But I hope you all read it so you know why, at 47 years old, husband, father, this is the journey I'm on. So please, read this and understand.

As a kid, I wasn't really into video games. I played sports (football and baseball), rode my bike, and was heavily into art. On Memorial Day 1982, I was hit by a car a block away from the house I grew up in. I suffered a broken arm, fractured skull, and had a blood clot on my brain that put me in a coma for 11 days while the doctors tried to figure out what was wrong with me. My Pastor read me my last rights, twice. I wasn't expected to make it because they couldn't find the clot. Once they did, I made an full recovery. But I was broken. I couldn't leave the house without a helmet to protect where they cut out a piece of my skull to remove the clot and my arm was in a cast. My summer was ruined. My Mother bought me a ColecoVision to pass the time until things could return to normal. I knew what Donkey Kong was, I'd seen my Uncle Billy play it along with Pac-Man at the pizza place next to his house, but I didn't know these other games. So I would sit and hoard the family tv playing Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr, Zaxxon, and Venture. My Mom would pry the controller from me some times and play Ladybug, Carnival, and Mouse Trap. I still say I get my competitive nature from her because we would trash talk each other, trying to get that bit of an edge when playing against each other. This is why when I'm doing poorly in a run, I say things like, "Damn, I suck!" I'm trying to encourage myself to do better.

Once the cast came off and the helmet was gone, I got back into sports and BMX, but I never passed up an opportunity to play video games with Mom. As long as my homework and chores were done, of course. lol

Time moved on and consoles moved on. Sega Genesis and NES in my teens, PlayStation 1, 2, 3, and 4 as an adult. Mom stopped playing on the consoles once the controllers had more than 2 buttons, but she did a little PC gaming in the 2000s. She never discouraged me from playing video games, as long as my responsibilities came first and they do to this day.

So why? Why am I writing this? What does it matter? Where's the point and how do I get to it?

Last night, after the initial shock of breaking those 2 records wore off and my stream ended, I broke. I cried like a baby thinking about those days on the couch with Mom, playing Coleco.

The ColecoVision leg of this journey has just begun. I'm starting what will be the hardest record chase today with Donkey Kong. I know she's watching and talking s**t.

And the list will keep getting longer, and longer, and longer.

Just waiting now for verification of my first NES WR! It's a tie, but I'll take it. I missed the last split because for some reason I forgot how I was entering them. I switched my inputs earlier today from my keyboard to my controller and for some reason, on the last split, I reached for my keyboard. The Super Famicom Games that are incoming. Super Donkey Kong 1, 2, and 3, and Rockman (MegaMan) 7, X, X2, and X3. The duplicates he's giving me for my personal collection. :D

I haven't been talking on here much the past few days but I've been busy, in pain, and streaming every day.

UPDATE: My daughter Lita and I absolutely crushed one of the Pac-Man 256 co-op records last week by over 25 seconds (see video), I got another top 3 in an UNO (Ubisoft) category (waiting for verification), and starting tonight, I'm going to be running Star Wars Battlefront.

At least until Tuesday...

On Tuesday, my channel will be going full retro for speedrunning. Thanks to an old friend from my challenge eating days, I have acquired a refurbished Nintendo Entertainment System, a 72/60 pin adapter so I can play Famicom (Japanese Nintendo) cartridges on it, and he has put in the mail a plethora of NES games, a starter Famicom collection, and some Super Famicom games that will fit in an old Super Nintendo Entertainment System that belonged to my late Sister-In-Law Cindy that I forgot we had. I don't know exactly what games are coming outside of the Super Famicom which is Super Donkey Kong 1 and 2, and a bunch of Mega Man games.

While I wait to find a partner on PS4 *coughGeorgeColescough* *coughBrumaccough* to go for the co-op Pac-Man 256 WRs, I've decided to put that Sega Genesis Collection I bought on PS4 to use. Not sure which game I'll be starting with, but it may be time to stray away from the RNG side of speedrunning and go more retro.
