EduTutorVA
The pandemic has widened the already alarming learning gaps for K-12 underserved students.
EduTutorVA provides trained college students and alumni tutors to support students in core academic areas while giving tutors a positive introduction to teaching.
EduTutorVA is excited to welcome Meredith Fortner as our new Executive Director and Education Coordinator. Meredith will lead us into our second year and help grow our programs in the three school divisions we currently serve. She will work with school administrators from Fairfax County Public Schools, Arlington Public Schools, and Alexandria City Public Schools school divisions and with aspiring K-12 educators from George Mason University and NOVA Community College to provide targeted, high-impact tutoring for Title 1 students placed at risk of falling below grade-level benchmarks.
Meredith brings experience as an instructional leader to the role of Executive Director/Education Coordinator. She is passionate about mentoring novice teachers to provide individualized interventions to the students we serve. Presently, she is an instructional coach for Alexandria City Public Schools, where she remains grounded in the work of public education as we emerge from this unique era of learning during a global crisis.
Every week, EduTutor tutor’s reflect on the impact they are having on their students.
Here are two testimonials that highlight EduTutor’s successes:
Jill R., a tutor at Barcroft Elementary School, says "My student doesn't want the session to end saying, 'Can we meet everyday?'"
Megan, another tutor at Barcroft, says "In just three tutoring sessions, [I've] seen my students' social and academic growth. The students’ personalities shined through as they got to know each other, and now the students are progressing from number places identification activities to multiplication tables."

The Virginia PALS, a phonological awareness literacy screening, revealed alarming data about the impact on COVID-19 on PreK-12 education.
Kindergarten and first grade students started the school year at an increased risk of reading failure compared to last year - and among these students, minorities and economically disadvantaged children were the most affected.
EduTutorVA strives to provide support for these underserved children who are falling behind.. Our tutors work with 1st-3rd grade students in Arlington and Alexandria and specifically target literacy and math skills to make sure students get the help they need so that they can succeed in the classroom.

EduTutorVA Steering Committee member Kris Amundson published an opinion piece on the state of K-12 education in Virginia and the path forward in the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Today, EduTutorVA celebrates the end of our first semester of virtual tutoring. Launching our pilot program across 3 school districts simultaneously (Fairfax County, Arlington County, and Alexandria City) has been challenging, but we are thrilled to begin bridging the learning gap for underserved students. This fall, EduTutorVA served 37 of Northern Virginia’s neediest elementary and middle school students.
EduTutorVA is grateful for your support as we look forward to growing our program next semester and continuing to give our students and tutors the resources they need to succeed.
“Students [this] fall are likely to retain about 70 percent of [last] year’s gains in reading and less than 50 percent in math. Losses are likely to be more pronounced in the early grades, when students normally acquire many basic skills, and among those already facing steep inequities.”
EduTutorVA is providing tutoring to elementary and middle school students to address this learning loss and the achievement gaps that continue to widen during online learning.

This November EduTutorVA celebrates the launch of its pilot tutoring program. Former educators and legislators founded EduTutorVA to address the learning canyons underserved students are facing in the wake of the pandemic. EduTutorVA connects college students studying education with children to provide free virtual tutoring.
Since its inception in May 2020 EdututorVA has:
-23 tutors working with 28 students in 3 school districts.
-Collaborated with College of Education and Human Development - George Mason University and NOVA Community College to find tutors and provide Education students with practical experience and professional development.
-Launched in 3 school districts: Fairfax County Public Schools, Arlington Public Schools, and Alexandria City Public Schools.
-Partnered with NWEA to provide pre and post testing to identify student’s needs and track the success of tutoring.
EduTutorVA gives thanks to all of the groups (Communities In Schools of NOVA, Community Foundation for Northern Virginia, Edu-Futuro) that have come together to launch this critical program and looks ahead to expanding EduTutorVA’s services to more deserving students who need tutoring.
