At long last, this book is ready. It's been a labor of my intense desire to get the "Rolland" message into the hands of teachers across the globe so they can, without fail, positively impact the lives of their students. It's more than just a way of teaching. It's a way of healthy, balanced, relaxed, enjoyable playing. It teaches an understanding of how the body naturally moves, and how, when learning to play with balanced motions, the instrument and player can have a symbiotic relationship that neither hinders the beauty of the performance nor causes pain or injury to the player. Here is an explanation of the book, in a nutshell:
Skills, Scales, and Tunes by Joanne May is a resource for teaching string technique with an awareness of the entire body, free from excessive tension, and resulting in more balanced, energy-efficient movements in string playing that result in less pain, fewer injuries and free-flowing musicality. For public school, private studio, and youth orchestra teachers. Clear descriptions of each skill are found throughout. Rolland pedagogy is enjoying renewed interest, nationally and internationally. A new Rolland Certification program has enrolled teachers from throughout the US and Canada, Singapore, Greece, Spain, South Africa, England, Australia, Germany, China, and Hong Kong. Attendance at Rolland webinars and workshops have numbered in the thousands. This 21st-century Rolland pedagogy-based publication will capitalize on and feed this wave of enthusiasm for the teachings of Paul Rolland, one of the 20th century’s greatest string pedagogues.
