Decades-Long Debate on 'Teenage' Tyrannosaur Fossils Takes Another Turn 18/01/2024

When it comes to juveniles, a debate has raged among paleontologists, spurred by a 1942 discovery of a small, T. rex-like skull in Montana. Some believed the fossil belonged to a T. rex that had failed to reach maturity—a “teenager,” as some would later call it—though others argued the fossil represented a new species altogether, called Nanotyrannus lancensis.

Top Stories of 2023: No. 10 dinosaur fossils discovered in Royal Gorge Region 11/01/2024

For the first time in history, the Royal Gorge Regional Museum and History Center had the qualifications and opportunity to accept, preserve, and eventually display a fossil that was discovered in the Royal Gorge Region. As a bonus, the fossils that were located were some of the largest, and most exciting, finds in recent memory.

In January, three fossils that are believed to be from a longneck sauropod dinosaur were unearthed in the Royal Gorge Region. The discovery began with the spotting of just one fossil, however.

Recent fossil discovery suggests the first dinosaur egg was leathery 16/11/2023

This discovery may represent the earliest fossil record of the association between adult dinosaurs and nests, and the species name reflects this association: Qianlong means "Guizhou dragon," while shouhu means "guarding"—a reference to the preservation of adult skeletal fossils in association with embryo-containing egg fossils.

Recent fossil discovery suggests the first dinosaur egg was leathery The discovery of several exceptionally preserved reproduction-related dinosaur specimens over the last three decades has improved our knowledge of dinosaur reproductive biology. Nevertheless, due to limited fossil evidence and a lack of quantitative analysis on a broad phylogenetic scale, much about...

Dinosaur feathers were more similar to modern birds than thought 12/10/2023

Previous research suggested that dinosaur feathers contained proteins that made them more supple than modern birds. However, University College Cork (UCC) scientists think that theory could be wrongly based on degradation caused by fossilization. This would mean that the proteins have remained unchanged for all these years and dinosaur feathers were stiff, enabling them to glide.

We're still learning:

Dinosaur feathers were more similar to modern birds than thought This means that some species of feathered dinosaurs would have been able to use their feathers to glide.

Asin tibuok, nicknamed the dinosaur egg, is one of the rarest salts in the world. In the 1960s, salt-making families in the Philippine island of Bohol would trade it for food and other goods. But the craft nearly disappeared in the late 20th century when younger people left the trade for more profitable careers.

Portuguese Man Accidentally Finds 82-Foot-Long Dinosaur in His Backyard 28/09/2023

Makes me want to dig around in my own yard!

It all started in 2017. While carrying out construction work, the owner of the property in central Portugal noticed the presence of several fragments of fossilized bones in his yard. He called scientific authorities, and last month they unearthed several “important” skeletal elements of a beast that may have been 82 feet long (25 meters).

Anyone been there?

It helps to know that the District has an official dinosaur. Yep, for real.

It was discovered in 1898 when workmen were digging for a sewer at First and F Streets SE. After the initial excitement, the bones –vertebra and other bone fragments– sat at the Smithsonian Museum for ninety years. According to Smithsonian Magazine, that’s when paleontologist Peter Kranz re-examined them and determined they were from a hitherto unknown dinosaur, which he informally named “Capitalsaurus” for a 1990 Washingtonian article.

Artist molds a special Montana dinosaur in ceramic 14/09/2023

Dinosaurs inspire us our whole lives.

In 2012, Kern and a fellow artist were organizing a dinosaur-themed art show. He found one of the cheap toys and slip-cast it in ceramic, a mold-making process to re-create an object multiple times. It was just an idea that popped into his head, based on that fond memory. He produced some more, and galleries called him back and asked him for a re-supply.

“I never envisioned they would become what they were,” he said.

People collect as many species as he can make, often in a specific color. Or a particular species in multiple colors.
