Create Your Calm

Help for people who struggle with worry, anxiety, and panic.

20/08/2020

No one enjoys their relationship to anxiety or panic disorders. There is a benefit. Like those who suffer in the gym, people who suffer under anxiety can come out of it sronger, better and more resilient. Keep putting in the work. It may get worse before it gets better. It may seem like it's taking forever. Just don't give up. Trust that you will grow.

A conversation today went something like this. I look forward to being a disgrace to anxiety... to be unworthy to carry the banner of worry.

Researching my way through an article about the need to choose joy instead of waiting for joy to happen as a result of fortunate circumstances. Surprisingly, there are many who are unconvinced that we are in charge of our own attitudes. I'm convinced I am in charge of mine, even though I frequently struggle with being pissy and entitled. I think this concept is one of the main pillars that help us overcome anxiety.

I always imagined that being surrounded by relative wealth and ease would make me more grateful. It doesn't. On the contrary, gratitude seems more difficult with more stuff. It takes a measure of discipline to make gratitude a reality in my life, but totally worth it. It is a total game-changer for anxiety disorders. Nothing changes emotions so dramatically as the genuine practice of gratitude.

This is one of those things on loop when it comes to my children who come at me like I am their only possible source of entertainment. It's just good advice for all of us.

Social media is not evil. However, don't doubt for a moment that your attention is a commodity for sale on the social media market. Huge salaries exist for those who can engineer and biohack ways to keep us online for longer and longer periods of time. But your time is yours... until you give it away. The average adult spends about 3 hours every day. For the youger gen z group, it's almost double that. It is one of the reasons behind the explosion of anxiety related disorders. Exposure to the curated versions of people creates self-doubt. Then there is FOMO and online harrasment. The trickle of dopamine after recieving the social currency of likes and shares keeps us addicted. An addiction that doesn't get much attention because everyone is doing it. Unfortunately, we have the social media crack pipe with us 24/7. Social media is not evil but our time with it is should be budgeted.

People with anxiety disorders are awesome, even if we pay a huge emotional toll for being that way. While this list can't be considered to be at the level of scientifically proven fact (even though some are), my experience with anxious people indicates that these attributes are generally true and on point. My purpose is not to submit a peer-reviewed statement with level I evidence but to submit to those who suffer from anxiety disorders that we are special. We have characteristics that make us useful and necessary people. I know many feel hopeless - that their best days are behind them. I want to speak courage to us and offer the strength of hope. I know you're frustrated but don't lose heart.

The compass of complaining never leads to a destination of peace. Instead, it is found through the lens that focuses on gratitude.

Ever go into a situation (like a movie) with really high expectations only to come away disappointed? The problem often isn't with our reality (which we can't change) but our expectations. Is this vote for lowered expectations? (Remember the SNL skits?) Is it the expectation of hatred so we can be happy with indifference. NO! It's changing our expectations from the curated versions of happiness we find on Instagram pages for the simple happiness of hearing outrageous laughter from a moment spent with a child. To sit in amazement of clouds and rain or sunshine as it burns pleasantly into your skin. It's an invitation back into the beauty of your everyday life to enjoy and find happiness in the simple things that brought us joy as children.

Praying in the middle of a panic or anxiety attack is common. I get it. If you've experienced one, you've likely done it too. The problem with panic praying is that we usually are praying for a rescue while God is wanting to renew us in the middle of our distress. When Jesus calmed the storm, He asked the disciples, "Where is your faith?" He can calm the storm, but sometimes he would rather grow our faith until it exceeds the strength of our fear. Don't get me wrong. I still want the miraculous removal of anxiety from my life and I'll keep asking for it. But I don't want to miss the opportunity to be transformed into someone more resilient by changing the way I think when anxiety roars at me. Romans 12:2.

When Jesus calmed the storm and His followers in Luke 8:22-25, He ended the ordeal with one question: "Where is your faith?" It's still one of the best questions we can ask ourselves.

A solid treatment for anxiety has existed for about 2,000 years. Try this daily practice (it takes me about 7 minutes) for a week or longer and see if it doesn't work for you too. This simple exercise has been creating calm in peoples lives and has certainly stood the test of time. There's a link in my bio for more information.

21 Causes Of Anxiety The causes of anxiety are complex and often out of our control. There are, however, steps we can take to overcome the causes of our anxiety.

Based on Philippians 4:4-9, these are five things to do every day that ultimately bring us consistent joy and contentment. They're completely free and accessible to everyone. Even those without pathological anxiety will benefit from added joy. Who doesn't want more?

Seeking out anxiety help that is tailored to the Christian can be difficult. Finding totally free help is even more rare. This new site (link in bio) does both. Bring your anxiety - there's no judgement here. Bring your doubts and your questions. We can work through them together. Anxiety is a thing Jesus spoke about... not to beat people down but because He anticipated it would be a struggle for us. And here we are struggling. But our struggle is not without hope.

Changing your focus to gratitude over anxiety and not allowing the situation to make that determination for you is a great step toward avoiding anxiety issues to begin or correcting those which have already taken root in our minds.

Brain imaging studies reveal that our brains grow where our focus flows. We can change the way we think and uproot habitual anxious thinking. We can choose what we will focus on and how our future brain will react.

22/07/2020

We can habituate our attitude by deciding on how we focus on our situation. We can't allow the situation make the choice for us. We are the boss of our attitude. We decide how we will respond. Even when we can't be grateful "for" the situation, we can be grateful "in" the situation.

This approach to anxiety is based on the principles in Philippians 4. The resource is completely free and designed from a Christian perspective.

Gratitude improves mental health and physical health. It has also been demonstrated to improve sleep and self-esteem.

Gratitude is...
1. Worship: It describes God as our provider. Revelations 7:11-12
2. Humility: We recognize good things as a gift separate from our effort. Isaiah 26:12
3. Evidence of our belief: Unbelievers refuse to thank God. Romans 1:21.
4. Sign of growth: Colossians 2:7

Gratitude rhymes with attitude: The attitude is more important than the words spoken.
The problem with gratitude: We can turn this into an assignment instead of an attitude. It is more important to BE grateful than to successfully complete a gratitude assignment.

5. Effective: It is simply one of the best treatments for anxiety. Anxiety cannot coexist with gratitude. Gratitude is sunlight to dark emotions and thoughts. It eliminates them.
6. Spin: Gratitude reshapes perspectives about unpleasant events. Philippians 4:11-13

Your attention is your property until you give it away. Social media will be glad to take it and sell it to advertisers. God wants you attetion so He can give you peace and create a masterpiece out of your life.

Whether faith or fear wins the daily war in our minds depends entirely on which we will arm and feed and focus. We are directed to "Fix our minds" on God (Isaiah 26:3) and to "Fix our thoughts" on truth and excellence (Philippians 4:4-9).

All or nothing, perfectionistic thinking is counter productive. Plan your response to periodic failure and respond by always starting over. It's the trajectory of our habits and NOT the perfection of them that will lead us forward.
