Notes on a Scandal

True crime podcast based on the book Society Girl: A Tale of S*x, Lies & Scandal in Pakistan (looking for a publisher!)

By Saba Imtiaz & Tooba Masood-Khan

28/08/2023

Notes On A Scandal get featured in : "In this podcast, one of Pakistan’s first in the true crime realm, we travel to Karachi in the late 1960s and early ’70s, when the city’s lust-fueled nightlife and high-society scandals would rival the most sensational eras of Hollywood or New York.

This story has it all: the mysterious death of a tortured poet, Mustafa Zaidi, whose body was found next to his unconscious muse and lover, the socialite Shahnaz Gul, renown for her beauty; a rumored su***de pact; an exhumation; a murder trial; breathless media coverage; and even revenge p**n, which was not digital as we understand it today, but printed on thousands of fliers.

The show’s hosts, Tooba Masood
and Saba Imtiaz, Pakistan-based journalists, have been researching the circumstances surrounding Zaidi’s death for years. Over two seasons, they share their findings in great detail, attempt to apply logic to the gossip of that time and debate the legitimacy of the possible scenarios. This is an independent podcast, and some might find the format — a conversation between the hosts, with a couple of notable guests in Season 2 — simplistic, but there is nothing simple or boring about the tale they’ve resurfaced."

In the 1960s, Shahnaz Gul and Saleem Khan moved to Karachi from Lahore — a city where the nightlife was still “in disco terms, frighteningly small.” Here’s a story on Lahore nightlife from Pakistan Times, published February 23, 1971 — from the Liaquat National Library archive.

The lives of the elite in the 1960s and 1970s are quite often referred to as some sort of golden era or seen as representative of the time for the entire country — when it is in fact nostalgia by and for the 1%. In the 1970s, critique of the elite in Pakistan didn’t just come from the right-wing, but also from the left. In November 1971, the socialist magazine Al Fatah published a story attacking industrialists who were partying while the country was at war.

As news spread across Karachi — and Pakistan — about Mustafa Zaidi’s death, with friends and family arriving at the KDA house where Mustafa was wound, word also emerged about the woman who was at the house: Shahnaz Gul, a minor socialite, who was found unconscious. She was taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, and this photo — of a cop by her bedside — would later cause speculation that the police favoured her. But in reality, the officer was actually an acquaintance. Much of the reportage in the weeks after Mustafa’s death was based on speculation and gossip, turning this story into a full blown scandal. In the next episodes of Notes on a Scandal, we’ll talk more about the life and times of Shahnaz Gul.

In 1970, Mustafa Zaidi moved to Karachi, where the city’s elite were regulars at hotels like the Metropole. You could dance the night away at the Samar or sit at the bar and watch the band play or catch Marzyeh Kanga perform a special cabaret as a waiter went around the room serving expensive whiskey or enjoy a wholesome meal of Dhansak with the family at the Shalimar on Sundays.

The Metropole Hotel was inaugurated by the Shah of Iran in 1951 with permanent suites reserved for the Shah, Queen Elizabeth of England, the Aga Khan and the Nawab of Bahawalpur. It was here that guests would frequently see Madame Noor Jehan and Shamim Ara getting their hair and makeup done.
