An important lesson from past refugee waves is the need to engage local populations in the immediate and longer-term strategies of support and labour market integration. National governments should make it possible for more local-level groups to support arrivals – including the people who are going to employ them, work alongside them and provide them with the day-to-day services they will need.
If local populations are engaged in the process of integrating refugees, the experience will challenge any potential misconceptions or prejudices that may emerge.

SCA President Mogens Kirkeby emphasises that many community organisations and individuals have already taken the initiative to help enable refugees and migrants to enjoy their human right to be active and participate in sport, even if they are awaiting formal approval to join their new communities.
“Many civil society organisations – not least sport organisations – have shown their human capacity by assisting refugees in finding just a little dignity, a little friendliness and a little happiness in their lives,” Kirkeby says.

About IntegrAction
The process of integration and social inclusion of migrants and refugees in the host countries across EU has gained further attention in the aftermath of the recent humanitarian refugee crisis, however it remains rather slow. Migrants suffer of discrimination behaviours and face obstacles such as low knowledge of the host country language and literacy, difficulties regarding the recognition of their qualifications and skills, and limited access to quality education system and the job market.
