Working Western Rail, now an officially approved AQHA class as of 2023, is a true rail class where there are no patterns, and horses are judged on their ability to cover ground with grace and self-carriage, a willing attitude, and smooth transitions. The class has been described as โfunโ, โa great starter class for people learning to showโ and โa way to give competitors a new venue to showcase their horses.โ The division is also popular because it doesnโt require fancy tack or attire, so competitors can get involved without breaking the bank.
But donโt let the low-key ranch attire fool youโthese are serious competitors out to showcase the best in their horses in this exciting new addition to the show world.

RANCH HORSE APPEARANCE
We are working with our judges committee, including Gary Roberts and Lolli Denton, to get a โchecklistโ put together to clarify the new ranch horse appearance scoring element at least within West Coast Ranch Horse for judges and exhibitors alike. In the meantime, this is a good resource from the Western States Versatility Ranch Horse Association. It is found in the appendix of their rulebook.
Many members have asked us about this scoring element that AQHA introduced and expressed a fear that it is very subjective at this point, with little to no standardization. We are looking forward to an ideal that WCRH can adopt and that we can all strive for. Ranch Horse Appearance is not about what you are wearing, the color of your horse or the color of your ensemble. Ask yourself โWould the judge like to ride my horse for a day of ranch work? Can the judge picture my horse riding the pasture at all gaits covering ground, working gates, checking cattle and doing other ranch tasks? Does the horse look comfortable, broke, willing and reliable, prepared for a dayโs work and any task you might encounter?โ This is what ranch horse appearance is about. Stay tuned for more definitive guidance from WCRH for both judges and exhibitors.
