In this week's Veteran Profile, we commemorate the heroism and leadership of Brigadier General Kenneth Newton Walker, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during World War II. Despite facing heavy enemy fire, General Walker fearlessly piloted his bomber into a group of Japanese fighters, enabling his gunners to take down several of them. Believe it or not, the drainage (or “exudate”) coming from a wound is a great indicator of where the wound is in the healing process.

This fluid is made up of serum, fibrin, and immune cells, and can range in color, consistency, odor, and volume.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what the color of your wound drainage can tell you about what’s going on beneath the surface:
-Clear or very pale yellow: normal, serous fluid
-White/cloudy: indicates the presence of fibrin strands due to inflammation or infection
-Pink/red: sanguineous fluid contains red blood cells due to capillary damage, may also appear mostly clear with small red clots
-Yellow/tan/brown: slough (dead tissue) or presence of fluid from another part of the body
-Green: bacterial infection

When you’re managing wound care for yourself or for another, it’s important to always follow your healthcare provider’s instruction-and to inform your provider of any change in the appearance of the wound drainage (and any other concerns or changes you notice).
