"Cassandra knew exactly what she meant. She recalled moments from her childhood, standing outside doorways, trying desperately to eavesdrop on adult conversations at gatherings. They would talk about Georgia, where the family migrated from in the 1930s. First in vibrant, colorful tones, then like a sunset, the light would change, and their voices became whispers. There was talk of beatings, lynchings, ungodly things that would drain the life and soul from lesser beings, but there they sat, survivors of a holocaust unnamed."

Mahmoud Darwish -Palestinian poet
1941 –
2008
I belong there. I have many memories. I was born as everyone is born.
I have a mother, a house with many windows, brothers, friends, and a prison cell
with a chilly window! I have a wave snatched by seagulls, a panorama of my own.
I have a saturated meadow. In the deep horizon of my word, I have a moon,
a bird’s sustenance, and an immortal olive tree.
I have lived on the land long before swords turned man into prey.
I belong there. When heaven mourns for her mother, I return heaven to her mother.
And I cry so that a returning cloud might carry my tears.
To break the rules, I have learned all the words needed for a trial by blood.
I have learned and dismantled all the words in order to draw from them a
single word: Home.

So true!
My husband and I watched His House last night and it did not disappoint! You’ll find some familiar haunted house tropes in this movie, but what sets it apart are the powerful visual elements from director Remi Weekes and the human story it explores. The protagonists are Sudanese refugees suffering from PTSD from the human horrors they witnessed (which Weekes tackles with grace and restraint), only to find themselves confronting a horror of a different kind as they struggle to adapt to a new lifestyle. I won’t spoil the rest, but if you’re into paranormal horror, this is one to watch.
"We were still alive when they dug our grave. At least in the minds of those who knew us ... We are still, but we don't rest. Not with the cacophony of those who still draw breath so callously living out their days above us. We hear their joys and their sorrows, their whispers and their secrets, the lies that they live with and the ones that kill them, yet we are unmoved. " - Hallowed Ground
