I don't know why this hasn't received more publicity, but this fifty-foot sculpture was unveiled recently in South Dakota.
It's called 'Dignity' and was done by artist Dale Lamphere to honor the women of the Sioux Nation.

On 09/13/2023, one of our officers took a Fraud report from an individual who was contacted by an individual claiming to be from the "U.S. Marshals Service".

The individual provided a case number to the victim and stated they had a warrant for their arrest. They were told that they needed to clear out their bank account, reattach their Social Security Number to the account, deposit the money back into the account, and then provide all the information to the individual claiming to be with the Marshal's Service, or they would be arrested.

The victim wisely stated they believed this was a scam and was then told to go to the U.S. Marshals Service website and look at the employee directory on the page (to what site they were directed to isn't known, as the official US Marshal's Service site does not have an employee directory). The individual provided an actual employee's name and contact phone number to make it seem more credible.

When the victim stated that they were going to call their local police department to verify the warrant, the individual stated they would forward him to the Lehi City Police Department. The person then received a phone call from a female claiming to be from the Lehi City Police Department. The number that showed on the Caller ID was that of the Lehi City Police Department, although the individual definitely not an employee of our department.

The female told the citizen that it was the US Marshals Service that they had been speaking with and they needed to do what they were being told to do. Fortunately, the citizen was still hesitant and came to the police department in person, where our officer verified this was indeed a little more elaborate scam than might be typical.

Scammers are always getting more sophisticated. However, there are a couple things to remember that will keep your money out of their hands: Don't give your financial or other personal information to someone who calls, texts, or emails and says they're with the local, county, state, or Federal the government, we have no reason to ask you for that information.

If you do receive a call, text, or email that the caller identifies themselves as a representative of a government agency and asks for financial information, DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION THAN WHAT THEY MAY ALREADY HAVE OBTAINED THROUGH OPEN SOURCES. End the phone call and YOU CALL THE AGENCY DIRECTLY using a number that you have researched, not one provided to you by the caller. Don't allow them to 'connect' or 'transfer' you, this is another part of the scam, END THE CALL. DO NOT TRUST YOUR CALLER ID'S, numbers can be spoofed and make them appear as having come from a governmental agency.

As in this case, our department phone number was spoofed by the scammer to make it seem legitimate. One of the greatest tools these scammers have is the use of urgency and fear tactics; Fear of an impending arrest and officers showing up to your home or place of work can be a strong driver to make poor decisions. Scammers will use the urgency of impending events, like officers are on their way to arrest you or a grandchild is in jail and needs bail money immediately.

Please, if you ever receive this type of contact, don't entertain them, end the call and contact our department with whatever information you have. The antidote to all scams is knowledge and vigilance, please share it with others. Scams continue to circulate because the scammers are successful and adapt.

In order to protect yourself you have to be 100% vigilant and successful while a scammer need only be successful a small percentage of the time when they are casting a wide net, making hundreds of calls each day.
