Our curriculum choices for 2021
This is probably the topic I get asked about most often. And I get it. In my first year of (preparing for) homeschooling, all I did was look at curriculum options. And I learned a lot. It is a valid, and natural place, to start. But looking back, I now understand what the veteran homeschool moms told me then. There are other things more important than your curriculum choices. Like your reasons for choosing not to outsource your children’s education. And your lifestyle choices in general. Your definition of education. The habits you would like your children to form. Etc.
Our youth pastor says that when he looks at all the fantastic resources available for children’s ministry, he sometimes wishes our church had a bigger budget, to get some (or all) of those resources. But then he realizes, if you can’t successfully run the children’s church without all the bells and whistles, you would probably also not get it done using all the bells and whistles. He has a valid point.
And the same can be said for educating your children. Do not fall into the trap of thinking “If I can just get this”, our homeschool will run much smoother. It probably won’t. Getting it right, starts with doing the basics right. Spending time with God, having a clear vision, pointing your children to God, and pouring YOURSELF into the curriculum that you choose. Your children need your time, your gifts, your love. Not the curriculum per se.
So, I am going to share our curriculum choices for next year, and the extras that we love. But I do not suggest that any of these resources be served as a master. Remember, as Randy (Masterbooks) always says, “You are the carpenter, the curriculum is the tool”. Buy fantastic tools, definitely. But use it in your own hand, to serve you in educating your children.
