🌟 What an incredible day!

With the collaboration of Msc in Natural Resources Management for Tropical Rural Development UNIFI of Scuola di Agraria - Università di Firenze, our association had the privilege to organize a visit to Macfrut, a renowned event in the fruit and vegetable sector, both in Italy and internationally. 🌎

This experience provided the students with a comprehensive insight into the industry, featuring debates, conferences, technical and scientific meetings, as well as invaluable networking opportunities with professionals.

For our young scientists, this was more than just a visit— it was an invaluable opportunity to update their knowledge, reflect on industry trends, and connect with like-minded professionals.

We're thrilled to have been a part of such a enriching experience! 🌱🍎🥦🌱

Online International Course on "Sand Dams as Water Harvesting Intervention for Climate Change Adaptation"

The enrolment for the VIII edition of our course on is finally open!

https://www.dagri.unifi.it/index.php?module=CMpro&func=viewpage&pageid=882

The course will deal with sand dams as an intervention for climate change adaptation and mitigation. Sand dams are impermeable structures built to collect and retain water within the volume of sediments transported by ephemeral rivers. The artificial aquifer created by the sand dam is able to reduce evaporation losses, guarantee good water quality and make water available during the dry seasons.

Free places are available for:
- Ph.D. students at the University of Florence (3 places)
- Staff and grant holders and researchers of DAGRI department (3)
- MSc and BSc students at the University of Florences (5)

𝗠𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 (𝗘𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗮) 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽! 🙌

Mekelle University is one of the top Federal Public Universities in Ethiopia that was severely affected by the war in . The university was among the top three public universities well-known for its quality-oriented academic programs, problem-solving research works and wider community engagements in the last twenty-five-plus years since its establishment.

Nowadays, however, the was unable to accept students, its academic staffs were unable to deliver the regular teaching-learning, research and community engagement duties have been interrupted, its development projects have been disrupted or damaged, its buildings, laboratories, machines and student dormitories have been destructed and many have been looted due to the war.

As part of the recent peace agreement signed in Pretoria, South Africa, between the Federal Government and Tigray, Mekelle University is preparing to launch its teaching, research and community service activities at full scale after 6 months. This will, however, need financial support to restore damaged and looted infrastructures such as buildings, laboratory equipment, office and classroom facilities, student cafeteria and dormitory facilities, University vehicles, etc.

In addition, as a result of the war, the termination of all public services and the total siege on Tigray since June 2021, all its employees haven’t also received their salaries for the last 18 months. University employees are not even able to withdraw whatever savings they have in the bank and help their families due to the shutdown of bank services in Tigray.

This has exposed Mekelle University staff to unprecedented social and economic challenges and made the livelihoods of these researchers and their families unbearable. There are at least more than 800 researchers on the main campus (Endayesus) alone who are struggling to put food on the table for their families.

As researchers who collaborated with the University in past, we want to help our colleagues at the Institute of Water and Environment of Mekelle University, with a small .
