Joey Knight vs Charlie Martin- Queensbury Lightweight Title- May 11th 2019
After claiming the title two months earlier against Daryl Goddard, I defended my title against an unbeaten fighter with a couple of upset wins under his belt in Charlie Martin.
This would be my first title defence and what better place to make it than in front of a home crowd at the Epsom Downs Racecourse.
Charlie was a tricky, tall and game opponent who came to win and showed a lot of grit after coming through a torrid first round to make a competitive fight out of it.
This fight is actually one of the ones I am proudest of as I had to overcome real physical and mental advesity in the ring that night. Unbeknown to the commentary team and many in attendance, the breathing condition that I had previously been managing had flared up really badly on fight week to the point where I would find myself gasping for air when I was just relaxing at home. I was in two minds whether to fight or not but having already sold all of my allocated tickets, I decided to fight rather than letting people down.
Knowing that I really only had a couple of good rounds in me, I decided to go against my usual style of boxing and look for an early stoppage in the hope that people would not see the poor condition that I was in. Had it not been for a standing count I may have ended the fight in that first round. However, I didnt and my opponent showed a massive amount of heart to battle back against me having already been hurt himself. It was a real test having to push through and outpoint my opponent while I felt completley exhausted but these are the tests boxing can throw at you and the ones you learn the most from!
After this fight I was told by my doctor that I was suffering with a condition called 'Inflamatory Bronchial Airway Disease' which meant me sitting out the rest of the year before coming back in early 2020.
Joey Knight vs Seb Hallet- Glory- September 9th 2017
A lot changed in my personal life after my first fight and for a long time I was unsure whether or not I would box again.
After nearly two hard years, I once again found myself stepping through the ropes, this time in front of a home crowd at the Epsom Downs Racecourse.
Once again I squared off against a hugely credible opponent in my now good friend Seb Hallett. Seb was a big test for me as he was unbeaten, had a lot of height and reach on myself and had been far more active.
However, I felt like a man possesed this night and there really was nothing or no one that was going to stand in my way.
You will see T&T on the back of my shorts in a dedication to my two uncles Tony and Terry who both sadly passed away in the build up to this fight. My performance that night was for them.
Im glad I caught Seb at the time I did. He has gone on to become a very skilled and strong boxer who I often now spar with on a regular basis. Watch out for him people!
Joey Knight vs Tim Carpenter- Never Back Down- 24/10/15
After taking up boxing in early 2015, I decided to lace up the gloves for the first time on the Queensbury Boxing League's 'Never Back Down' show.
After a couple of opponents pulling out, I ended up taking on a much more experienced man than myself who had over 15 fights outside the league to his name and was 10 years my senior.
This fight was my hardest to date and after coming back from a tough first round I managed to bite down on my gum shield and pull my way back into the fight, forcing the ref to jump in give my opponent a standing count in the last round which put me ahead on points and secured the win.
If your looking for the 'art' of boxing, then this may not be for you. But if you want to see a brutal fight with both men leaving there all in the ring, then watch this fight! 👊
