Why a Waterloo, Ont., school board has emerged as a battleground for ideological politics 15/10/2022

Our school board has become a battleground. If elected, I would gladly support progressive, evidence based policies. Death threats and hate speech have no place here.

We still have a long road to reconcile with the people of the First Nations. Take some time today to reflect and remember Every Child Matters.

One of my core policies is respect for everyone. I had a quick chat with one of our WRDSB students, hear more in the video below.

I’ve had several emails asking me my opinion on some of the current topics at our Board, so I thought I would answer it here for everyone:

I consider myself an ally of the LGBTQ+ community. I believe everyone deserves a safe and healthy learning environment.
I support Anti-Racism education. My family represents a mix of backgrounds, and we have experienced racism at WRDSB schools. I think there’s still work to do.

While I have varied feelings about actual CRT, it seems to me that it has been made the center of a straw-man argument meant to create fear and anger in discussions around anti-racism.

I support transparency in the process. While I understand there are now legal proceedings in the works, I think all discussions and decisions should be open to the public. Trustees are elected by the people and are meant to represent the people, and should be accountable to the people.

I support open dialogue and want to work with people who don’t agree with me. Waterloo Region is a diverse region with many backgrounds. We need to find common ground to support our learners and find a way to move forward and focus on education.

I would love to hear from you. If you have thoughts on what you want to see happen at the WRDSB, let me know!
