Last night during the warm up swimmers were provided the opportunity to work on some skills and drills. Here is Patrick, your Captain and Welfare Liaison, working on a frontcrawl drill.

The 3-tap frontcrawl drill helps with balance and rotation. The palm of the hand should always be facing backwards as you tap your head, back to your hip, up to your shoulder, and then fingertips into the water.

Will you be trying this at training next?!

Today (8th of March) is International Women’s Day. This week leading up to International Women’s Day Bucks Swimming has been celebrating inspirational women from the world of swimming. The final inspirational woman in our series is Martha McCabe.

Martha was a Canadian swimmer competing in the London 2012 Olympics finishing 5th in the 200m breaststroke. She then competed in the Rio 2016 Olympics again in the 200m breaststroke. Martha’s greatest achievement was winning a bronze medal in the 200m breaststroke at the 2011 World Championships. Since retiring, in 2020 Martha came out as gay. In recent podcasts Martha had explained that she felt so focused in swimming she didn’t realise her true sexual orientation until she retired. She has also talked about the importance of role models in swimming as she didn’t see many out LGBTQ+ athletes at an Olympic level in women’s swimming and she is now working as a mentor for the next generation with her organisation Head To Head. It has opened a conversation about the importance of LGBTQ+ people coming out in every sport.
