This one really struck a nerve with me. We shouldn't have to be signing petitions like this in 2022, but I'm asking everyone to sign this. We need schools to protect LGBTQIA+ kids at their most vulnerable times and we need a government who doesn't so flippantly allow this discrimination to happen.

I wrote this poem a while ago, about a year after my grandfather died. It was the first time I had ever felt pure, unadulterated grief; such a pivotal moment in my life that would forever change me. It truly hit me how fragile human lives are. It's a grief everyone unfortunately has to go through, and it's an experience that really does make people lose their last semblance of youth. This poem was my way to cope with it and to make sense of it.

I wanted to memorialize what an amazing man he is AND was in the best way I know; with my words. For those who have purchased the book, you may have noticed the dedication at the beginning was for him, too. To the people who had the privilege of meeting him, I'm sure we can all agree that he really was one in a million. Billion, even. Definitely even more than that.

Pa, I'm missing you a lot today. I hope wherever you are is treating you well. I can only hope that we'll see each other again one day.

I'm not going to lie, Autumn Speaks was a bit of a challenge to bring to fruition.

Artists of any kind all over the world struggle with the idea of 'good enough'. Online, it's even worse. When there is so much art out there to enjoy, it's hard to feel like you can stand as your own identity. It took me years to finally be comfortable with allowing people to read my writing for this exact reasoning; what if it's not good enough? What if it's been done before? Is there any point if it doesn't do well? What even IS the point of this?

Combine that with a complicated mental health story, and you get me. Anyone close to me knows that my history with depression, anxiety and body dysmorphic disorder is a long, chaotic road that I truly couldn't navigate for a while. Even now, I'm still learning. It's a superpower and a curse, and sometimes, I get confused between which one it is at any point. All the feelings of not being good enough are intensified, and it gets hard to just get through the day, let alone write a damn book.

However, writing has always been my therapy. It's been my way of making sense of these feelings, of my experiences and how I can release them when I can't bottle up anymore. I was freeing myself of those emotions, but they still swirled around me in a little bubble. It was only when I started sharing these that that bubble started to pop. I never thought I'd get to this point, but now, I'm here, sharing all of me to my friends, family and potentially some strangers.

I usually don't like to make posts like this, but just this once, I don't want to mask the struggle anymore. It's been a challenge to get Autumn Speaks out for so many reasons; fear, depression, imposter syndrome, a literal pandemic, identity searching, uni struggles, low self esteem...I could go on. There were countless times I had given up, including the last 24 hours before it went live; I was seconds away from deleting it all. For that reason, this isn't just a book anymore. This is evidence that sometimes, you can win. The standards you set for yourself you can let go of. And sometimes, you can beat mental illness, even just for the few seconds where it matters the most.

For those who have read Autumn Speaks, I would love to hear your thoughts, perhaps even your favourite poem if you had one. If not, please consider buying a copy to support me. Maybe even consider purchasing a copy for someone in your life who likes poetry. Whatever you decide to do, any support is greatly appreciated, and after reading this post, I hope you can look down at your copy and appreciate it just that little bit more. 🍂🧡

Sustainability is something that is really important to me. I believe everything we can do, we can do it greener. 🌱

Every order that gets packaged is wrapped by me as sustainably as possible. From the brown recyclable kraft paper, the plant based twine and the sticky tape (yes, even the sticky tape), it is all carefully wrapped in the most Earth friendly materials I can get.

I encourage everyone who receives their order to repurpose or recycle the materials as much as you can. My suggestions include: using the twine as a bookmark, or reusing the brown paper as packing for your own parcels! It's a little thing we can do to help make the world a little less filled with rubbish! ♻️
