Introducing Mike.Ā
In this article, Mike speaks candidly about his experience with NSCLC and finding out he has the ALK+ mutation.Ā
āāNo matter how rubbish I felt I'd make sure I always did the school run. I also walked and walked and walked. My wife and I walked for miles every day. I think it was cathartic for both of us just walking and talking, hoping for a future but not daring to believe one would be possible given the diagnosis I'd received.āā

Childhood cancer happens everywhere. Each year, more than 17,000 children are diagnosed with cancer in the United States. Globally, it is estimated that 400,000+ new cases of cancer affect children each year; however, this number may be vastly underestimated due to large numbers of undiagnosed cases.
The role of anaplastic lymphoma kinase in pediatric cancers:
"ALK is known to be involved in the pathogenesis of neuroblastoma through activating mutations or gene amplification, its role in the pathogenesis of other pediatric cancers is still elusive. In addition to neuroblastoma, the highāgrade amplification of ALK has been described in a subset of rhabdomyosarcoma cases. Normal ALK protein expression is restricted to the nervous systems of adult mammals, but the aberrant expression of ALK has been observed in a variety of pediatric cancers, including glioma and Ewing sarcoma. The discovery of oncogenic activation of ALK in neuroblastoma suggests that this cancer could be potentially treated with an ALK inhibitor, as could other cancers, such as nonāsmallācell lung cancer and anaplastic largeācell lymphoma."

We have two stories of ALK+ cancer in children on our website, both very tough reads. The more medical research that we can fund into ALK+ cancer the more it will help everyone.

The 4th February 2024, marks World Cancer Day - World Cancer Day means so much to us as a charity, not only for the fundamental value it holds but also, as our charities official launch date 2 years ago.
In the weeks following this launch, ALK+ International went from strength to strength. With your help, we more than doubled our target of 5k in less than 10 days.
Today, we stand together, with the UICC, founders of the World Cancer Day initiative. Our values are closely aligned, we believe that funding vital medical research will close the gap. We awarded our first research grant to the ICR last year and are committed to finding more research projects to fund in the near future.

Weāre excited to announce our first grant to The Institute of Cancer Research, London. šš©µš©·
The award of just under Ā£50k will help build a tissue bank of ALK+ and other oncogene-driven lung cancers. š¬š§¬š· The tissue bank will support Dr Paul Huang at The ICR working in collaboration with Professor Sanjay Popat from The Royal Marsden NHS to study the treatment resistance in ALK and EGFR lung cancers ā a significant unmet need.
Dr Huang, Molecular and Systems Oncology Group Leader at The ICR said: āItās often only possible for us to research cancers like this because of the incredible fundraising efforts of patient- and family-driven charities. Weāre so grateful to have the support of ALK+ International to help us start this project into cancers caused by ALK+ mutations.ā
Our co-founders and trustees, Joanna Jonathan, Jamie Gibbard and Cat Gibbard added, āSupporting life-changing research is the reason ALK+ International exists. The ICR is one of the worldās leading cancer research institutions and weāre thrilled to support the work of Professor Popat and Dr Huang. We are particularly grateful to everyone who donated and supported us over the past 18 months.ā

Introducing Pui
"I stay in the present and live mindfully, just thinking day-to-day and not too much into the future. Itās also about appreciating the simple things around me ā like the leaves falling on the ground, the birds singing, nature, love and the presence of family and friends."
These are wise words from Pui who continues to have a positive mindset despite her unexpected diagnosis of incurable ALK-positive lung cancer at the age of 34. Read Pui's incredible story in her own words here: https://www.alkinternational.org/alk-stories
