Well, it has come. An exponential curve in the death count. I've seen and commented on the past when we've had several exponential curves in the positive case count. Those eventually level out and a death or two follows some weeks later.
This is totally different. Taking more precautions helps but once the deaths are exponential, we're in a place where the community spread is so widespread and severe sickness and death are becoming commonplace. It means hospitals are at risk of overwhelm and our social safety net is very strained (health professionals, volunteer emergency crews, frontline and essential workers).
It is much harder to flatten an exponential death curve than it is to flatten an exponential positive cases curve. It takes longer and requires more widespread concerted effort. I'd say it also may require outside help, but that's not very realistic as other counties and states are actually still worse off then we are.
So, hunker down everyone. Take care of those near you, both your neighbors and your family. Run errands if you can, check in, send cards... All the things we've done but will be needed on a new level in the coming months.
Make public art on your lawn, have a snow sculpture competition with your neighbors, make and deliver cookies to your neighborhood. Anything to keep us connected and supporting eachother in these dark times.
Also, make sure to take care of yourself and your mind: meditate, go for walks, dance in your living room, journal, eat well, pick up a practice you've been meaning to do and make it a ritual.
We'll make it through this, many of us at least, and we need as many people ready to take up the reins and build back our communities as possible when the dust settles.

This graph demonstrates that the daily case rate is still dramatically higher than it has been the rest of the year.
The missing data recently is due to the Otsego County Department of Health no longer creating regular Press Releases.

28/12/2020

The popular pie chart.
I apologize as the previous pie charts were showing cumulative numbers and not the totals per month.
I have corrected that and you can see the last two months account for over 75% of the cases we've seen so far.

28/12/2020

I'm happy to see the overall daily active cases rate dropping, as the fallout from Thanksgiving slows. Sadly, we're likely to see it rise again as the December holiday impact should start showing up shortly. This graph understates the impact of all of those recent deaths.

28/12/2020

The Otsego County Department of Health has changed how they provide access to data, and is no longer releasing regular press releases. Thus, you'll see dots instead of consistent lines, but the trend is clear.
The pace of deaths in December has skyrocketed.
