Hammering out a metal kaleidoscope

South West band Hammerhead’s first offering on compact disc is an interesting kaleidoscope of heavy metal which is certain to gain a good response.
For an album containing all originals, 11 in fact, Hammerhead have produced some catchy toons bound to get thrashers banging off the walls in sheer delight.
Hammerhead One was laid down at Pet Rock Studios in an amazing four days and considering its quick inception, is a quality piece of work with a clean sound.
With its production financed by the band, the debut album with its hard-hitting lyrics, solid guitars and strong vocals is sure to help skyrocket Hammerhead into further success in the West.
It is a smorgasbord of heavier rock with a staple diet of thrash, led by the dynamic powerhouse voice of Allan Frearson, while Steve Smart showed he was no slouch when it came to vocals.
Together, the pair hit the right notes while bassist Tom Ross and drummer Peter Angel control the frantic tones.
Relationships, the state of the world, recreational drugs and the police are some of the social problems the band explores on Hammetrhead One but while some of the lyrics may be a little ‘depressing’ the band pulls it off thanks to the quality of the sound and variety of melodies.
For a first album from a young band, Hammerhead One has plenty of guts and raw appeal.
If you like the occasiona; ‘moshing’ Hammerhead One ably provides the motivation needed. to get the neck moving and the feet stomping.
In the near future, Hammerhead will go back into the studio and record Hammerhead Two.
They aim to have three CDs out within 12 months and it will be quite a challenge for the band to see if they can again produce such a variety of original songs, each catchy in their own way, in upcoming productions.

Hammers out to nail success.

You don’t often hear original hard rock bands in Margaret River.
Hammerhead have made themselves known in the South West but have their eyes set on bigger things, including Perth and the Eastern States.
They had national exposure when they were recorded live for Triple–J’s Australian Music Show.
The four band members came together in late 1993 after three other groups split – Toxic Shock, The Guillotines and Black Thorn.
Bass player Tom Ross and guitarist Allan Frearson were both in Toxic Shock but found the material they were writing was not suited to that outfit.
“There weren’t really any commercial venues for original bands down here”, said Ross.
“Cover bands do fine but it was an effort to find places who would give original music a go. Our first gig at the Yallingup Hall turned into a riot because 500 people showed up to see us but we were only allowed to let in 150.”
The band financed their own debut album, Hammerhead One.
They laid 19 tracks in four days at Pet Rock Studios, where they worked with Tony Italiano of DM3 fame.
“We were fired up at the studio because we had a good working relationship with Tony,” said Ross. “He guested on the CD and sang harmonies for us. We mixed 11 songs for Hammerhead One and the other eight will go on to Hammerhead Two.”
“In the next few weeks we go back to the studio to record another three tracks for the second album. We want to try to have four CDs out in the next 18 months and, in that time, we also hope to get signed to a record label.”
Although no singles have been lifted from the current album, there are songs that cover a wide range of subjects, including:
• My Momma Said - which has the older generation questioning the use of drugs by the younger set.
• Burning, Burning - looks at the woodchipping of old-growth forests.
• To Be, Or Not Be - questions existence.
• Maggott - is about Joe Detheridge, who had his jaw broken by a police officer a few years ago.
Detheridge is a friend of Hammerhead and Ross points out that the police can sometimes be too heavy handed.
“We’re not saying all police are bad but there is an element in the force that goes about things the wrong way,” he said.
(The songs present) social commentary with many of them reflecting the angst of youth against the establishment.”
Hammerhead One has a banner which says ‘Vené Voco’, Latin for “We come on a mission.”
Hammerhead play at the Dunsborough Resort Hotel on Wednesday (27/9) and the Margaret River Cultural Centre next Sunday (1/10) with Pit and Root System.
They also play at the Farm Gig, near Dunsborough on October 13 with nine other bands including Mother’s Crutch, SFD, Mutt and Strangers Bearing Gifts.
