Today would've been Tommy's 52nd birthday. Even though this is the 20th birthday we have celebrated without him, the love we have for him has never waned. He was such a bright light in so many people's lives and he gave so much of himself for family, friends and strangers. This purpose continues. Never forgotten.

Very excited to team up with The Burn Box again!

Mission accomplished!!! All of the COVID setbacks and waiting, and we were finally able to get together with the Hochbrueckner family. Walter looks GREAT and is in wonderful spirits all things considered. With all of your help and support we raised $16,000 for him and his family to go create amazing experiences with one another after Walter's battle with esophageal cancer.

It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of our father, Thomas P. Cullen Jr., after a two year battle with pancreatic cancer, on the morning of May 13th.

He was a member of the fire service for 50+ years, in four different departments, reaching the rank of Chief in two. Our father gave so much of himself to others and we will forever be grateful. He battled cancer courageously, longer than doctor's believed he would. Finally he has been reunited with our brother Tommy. The Cullen family thanks everyone for their love and kind words over the past several days. His dedication to his family, friends and community will forever be missed. 'Til we meet again, Dad.

In the weeks before his death, as a member of Squad 41 in the Bronx, Thomas Cullen studied for the Fire Department's lieutenant's exam. But even without a test ahead of him, his wife, Susan, said, his idea of pleasure reading was an abstruse volume about confined rescue or some other technical aspect of firefighting. If he worked in a kind of building he was unfamiliar with, he would read up on its structural peculiarities.

The couple met in 1992 at Fordham University, where Tom Cullen took the fire- fighters test and the law boards as a senior. He came from a family of lawyers, but "fire was his true love," Mrs. Cullen said. He made perfect scores on the exam, she said, but then had to wait four years for an opening, "buying time" as a CPR instructor and a dean of discipline at a public school.

Firefighter Cullen's 2-year-old son, Tom, shares the passion and already can distinguish one kind of truck from another. Father and son also shared a love of electric trains. Many nights, after the toddler went to sleep, his father would add a new twist or turn to the tracks on the living room floor. Mrs. Cullen continues the tradition, but with less panache. "Lucky for me he's not picky," she said.

Cullen, Thomas

This is the family of firefighter Anthony Mauro, 32. He works at Ladder 109 in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn and has been on the for 5 years. In June, while at work, Anthony suffered a seizure. The members on duty rushed to his aid and along with the support of the NYPD, he was taken to the hospital, where he was intubated. Doctors found multiple blood clots in his lungs as well as other complications, which they attributed to COVID-19. After multiple MRIs and surgery, the doctors at Columbia University Medical Center and , Anthony was diagnosed with Grade 4 Glioblastoma. He underwent successful brain surgery to remove the tumor, and is currently undergoing chemotherapy and radiation.

To complicate matters, his daughter, Chiara suffers from a rare condition that is often times not covered by insurance. Anthony, at times, has worked three jobs to cover his daughters medical bills. His wife, Ally, now has had to take a leave from her job to take care of her family, as bills mount.

His story is being brought to us by one of his fellow brothers at E241/L109, Jonathan Sadagursky, who runs the in memory of his own brother who succumbed to his own battle with cancer in 2012.
