Fun Fact #6 — Though I encourage people to read through the Tenebra City Series in publishing order (since it makes the Easter eggs much more fun!), the *events* in publishing order aren’t necessarily chronological.

Many of the books actually overlap, and there’s actually a masquerade scene at a gala hosted by the Etoirir clan that unites three of them specifically…

While Quiver & Quill was technically published first, the events of Grinch & Guile pt. I actually occur the earliest in the TCS timeline, with Grinch & Guile pt. II occurring one full year later.

Sin & Spell, Flame & Fraud, and Mistress of the Labyrinth have overlapping chapters, all featuring a scene that is set at the same masquerade, each from the perspective of a different set of characters.

And yes… a certain faun in a red scarf is also present in this scene!

Fun Fact #4 — Gideon may be a professor of Greek mythology in Quiver & Quill, but most Tenebra City bachelors are connected to mythology in some way…

One of the central themes consistent with each book in the main series is how our hero deals with the concept of fate vs. free will, which is often prevalent in Ancient Greek plays — in most cases, free will is nonexistent, as no one can intervene with a person’s predetermined fate.

Each of the bachelors grapples with this notion in their own way. Gideon rebels against it, Eden accepts it (almost to a fault), and Cadmus obsesses over it. Only G. R. Inch outright refuses to believe in fate in G&G, preferring to raise hell if he can’t move heaven.

Every FMC (“you”) is meant to act as the bridge between the more modern belief in free will and the Ancient Greek idea of fate. She challenges her MMC’s thoughts, allowing them to see beyond what they believed the heavens had in store.

While she doesn’t strive to erase the concept of kismet in its entirety and leaves the final interpretation of destiny up to her love interest, she helps them realize their potential… and that the true making of a person is not necessarily in their ultimate fate, but how they decide to operate within it.

Fun Fact #3 is another “What’s in a Name?” — Eden‘s last name — Decameron — is a nod to Giovanni Boccaccio’s collection of short stories. Written during the 14th century, these stories within a story portray love
(and lust) as a natural force that gives their protagonists the willpower to overcome their obstacles.

Eden’s internal struggle in Sin & Spell is his constant grappling with the belief that he doesn't deserve love. His rationale is that since incubi exist for pleasure, he is only worthy of lust — despite the fact that he tells FMC that this carnal vice can't exist without its corresponding virtue.

But as his story reaches its resolution, he starts heeding his own advice. Much like the characters in The Decameron, the natural force of love allows Eden to realize that the notion of vice and virtue being two sides of the same coin also applies to him — that lust is not necessarily a bad thing, and that everybody deserves a piece of paradise. ❤️‍🔥

Fun Fact #2 (and yes, I figured I should probs number these on the graphic) — Professor Gideon M. Dulcis, XIII‘s name pays homage to the original mothman. One of the meanings of the Latin word “Dulcis” is “pleasant”… and mothman was allegedly first sighted in the Point Pleasant area of West Virginia…

Legend says that the mothman was first seen in the Point Pleasant area from November 1966 to December 1967. The Point Pleasant Register was the first newspaper to report on the cryptid before the national press helped spread the story.

Additionally, The Mothman Prophecies by John Keel further popularized the legend in 1975 (and it was even turned into a movie in 2002). Today, there's an annual festival in Point Pleasant that takes place to celebrate our favorite fuzzy boy.

Gideon’s middle name is also an homage to the Mothman legend, but you’ll need to read Q&Q to find out what it is (the fae don’t give up their full names that easily…) 😏

For my first fun fact: anybody who has read the TCS might have become familiar with a certain faun wearing a red scarf. He’s had jobs in the books from being a valet at a gala to an usher at an opera house. He also tends to hang out at the Eventide Falls farmer’s market, as well as a certain bus stop in the Sapphire District. Since he’s made an appearance in literally EVERY book so far, I consider him the center of the Tenebra City Universe…

Bonus points for anybody who can guess who he was inspired by! 🧣

Remember when I said I was going to be pulling back in 2023? Well, that’s still the plan… but that doesn’t mean I can’t make some fun calendar graphics!

As much as I’m a big proponent of personal accountability, I also realize that *I’m* the one setting most of these dates in the first place. Writing is my side passion, so I really do want to make sure I protect that ardor by affording myself some more wiggle room and flexibility this year. Hence, I’m calling out TENTATIVE in this schedule as it is 100% subject to change depending on where this year takes me (honestly, I’m calling that out more for myself as a reminder than for you all, LOL).

Since I started writing towards the end of 2021, 2022 was technically my first *full* year as an author. I’ve learned a lot through the peers I’ve met, my new friends within the community, as well as my own introspection, and I’m truly thankful for the opportunity I’ve had to connect with all of you through our shared love of monster romance!

From publishing Sin & Spell in May to releasing Grinch & Guile: Part II this December, I’ve written 320K words across 60 chapters. While it’s not everybody’s cup of tea, each time I begin to write, I truly fall more in love with 2nd-person POV. Writing has been a great escape to turn to after finishing my full-time job for the day, and it’s very rewarding after logging all those desk bike miles to be able to put my books out in the world.

All of that being said, I definitely did experience a bit of burnout this year. After a couple of months of deliberation, I’m making the decision to pull back a bit in 2023. I want to ensure that writing remains an enjoyable escape for me rather than a chore to slog through for both my own mental health and for the sake of making sure I’m putting my best work forward for you all.

I basically published a novella a month in Q4 2022, so to say things were pretty busy is an understatement! I really loved exploring the softer side of a gargoyle artist (and writing a spicy take on the Ghost pottery wheel scene…) in H&H, was super excited to be part of my first anthology with MOTL, and finally got to the second installment of G&G in The Duet this year (where I can confirm that the gloves still stay on).
