The three-horned dinosaur, known as Triceratops ( in Latin : Triceratops ), is a genus ofhorned , herbivorous dinosaurs that appeared on Earth during the late Maastricht phase of the late Cretaceous period , about 68 million years ago, in the lands that today form part of North America . It is one of the last species of non-avian dinosaurs on the face of the globe, and it was completely extinct in the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event.which occurred about 66 million years ago. Triceratops is one of the most famous dinosaurs in general and those of the horned ones in particular, and among the most easy-to-identify species for the public by sight. Its fame is attributed to its distinctive appearance, as it is a four-legged horned dinosaur, with three horns emanating from its face , behind which lies a huge bony frill, and it has physical characteristics similar to those of a rhinoceros . These dinosaurs shared their habitat with Tyrannosaurus , which is believed to have been one of their chief predators .However, it is not entirely certain that both species fought or engaged in some battles, as they are portrayed in most dinosaur books and museums. Their distinctive horns and frills have been the subject of much speculation since ancient times. The prevailing traditional view is that they were used for self-defense against predators. Contemporary theories indicate that they may be used to distinguish between the sexes and between young and adults, and in courtship and mating displays , just as the peacock does when it displays its dazzling tail feathers to attract females during the breeding season , or in intimidation and intimidation displays, as do males of deer , antelopes and rhinoceros beetles .When she displays her horns in front of her opponents to intimidate her, after scientists discovered traces of blood veins in the largest skulls of many horned dinosaurs.
