Honoring a Hero’s Return
Mr. John Wardell has returned to the cliffs of Normandy nearly 80 years after he and his fellow Soldiers from the 2nd Ranger Battalion bravely scaled them during the D-Day invasion of World War II.
Mr. Wardell, now the last living member of his unit, stands as a testament to the courage, sacrifice and determination that defined that historic day.

Of the over 73,000 American troops that landed in Normandy on D-Day, four U.S. Soldiers received the Medal of Honor for heroic acts that day. The Medal of Honor is the nation's highest medal for valor in combat that can be awarded to members of the armed forces.

Few instances portray so clearly the courage, strength, & raw determination to change the course of history as the Allied invasion of Normandy in 1944. The resolve of the U.S. Army Soldiers, sailors, airmen, and the thousands of men & women who supported them speaks volumes about unity & shared values.

Rest in peace, Soldier.
The U.S. Army mourns the loss of Medal of Honor Recipient Captain Larry L. Taylor, who was one of our own - an American Soldier who never accepted defeat, never quit and never left a fallen comrade.
Taylor served in Vietnam from August 1967 to August 1968, flying some of the first Bell AH1-G Cobra attack helicopters in combat. Serving with D Troop (Air), 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry, 1st Infantry Division, Taylor flew over 2,000 combat missions in UH-1 and Cobra helicopters. He was engaged by enemy fire 340 times and was forced down five times. The U.S. Army awarded him at least 50 combat decorations, including the Silver Star, 43 Air Medals, a Bronze Star, and two Distinguished Flying Crosses.
We send our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones.
