1Upgrade of Pathology Practical Hall at MMMC 2009-10

Dr. B.M. Rajashekar and Dr. Kanagal Satyanarayana, 1961 batch

During one of our visits to pathology department we noticed that pathology Hall where we used to stain slides was in a poor condition. We asked Head of the department of pathology at that time how we as an alumni can help the department of pathology.

She requested whether we could replace the wooden table with granite and provide upgraded water and electrical system for the Hall. She also brought our attention the death of one of the Lady Asst. Professor who died looking at the electric microscope as there was no circuit breaker in the hall. We immediately decided to do the requested upgrade and share the cost between us. My brother who was a Karnataka electrical Board executive engineer offered his help to get it done for half the cost of PWD tender. Cost of the project was Rs: 600000.00 (6 Lakhs).

The whole project was completed with help of my brother in 5 months. There was left over money, we bought a wide screen LED 52 “TV monitor to project slides for the students.

I strongly feel if we Alumni put our mind and resources, we can get things done expeditiously.

“Where would I be except for Primary school at Village, Kanagal or for Mysore Medical college at Mysore” I wonder.

Thank you very much

God bless MMC

Kanagal Satya

1. MMC 1967 Batch and MMC- GANA’s Research, Education and Health Care Fund
MMC 1967 Batch launched a fund to benefit MMC during the 50th
Anniversary Celebrations of the batch in Mysuru in Dec 2017.

The batch raised a total of ₹ 46,17,338, with 33 alumni donating amounts from RS. 10,000 to $10,000. MMC GANA graciously matched dollar to dollar of the donations made in North America, directly to GANA, i. e., ₹ . 26,84,234. So, the grand total of RS. 73,01,572. was deposited in MAA trust account under the name "MMC 1967 Batch and MMC- GANA’s Research, Education, and Health Care Fund". It is being operated by the MAA Trust as an independent fund. The money was deposited in the State Bank of India, as a ten-year term deposit, yielding 6.75% annually.

In 2018, from this fund, ₹ 21, 81,029 was given to MMC to support several departments with very much needed equipment. Yearly Interest earned from the rest of the fund is being given out as grants to post graduate research, education, and health care activities of MMC. The post graduate candidates are selected through a yearly competitive selection process. In 2018, nearly three lakhs rupees were distributed to 7 such selected candidates.

MMC 1967 Batch's goal is to raise more funds in the future for long term support of this project, and to include a younger batch to join us to maintain the perpetuity of the fund. We very much appreciate the generosity of all the donors to this fund, matching funds donated by GANA, and the valuable advice and guidance given by members of GANA, MAA, and MMC, without which this venture would not have taken off. We seek continued support of all the MMC alumni in helping our Alma Mater to whatever extent we can.

And 1967 Batch MMC Alumni

2. MMC 1961 Batch and MMC – GANA’s Research, Education Fund 2011

Our Batch of 1961 collected approximately ₹ 20,00000 (₹20 lakhs) including dollar-to-dollar generous matching from MMC-GANA. It was deposited in MAA trust account under the name “MMC 1961 Batch Fund” The purpose of this is to create a corpus fund as a fixed deposit in the trust account. The interest earned from the fixed deposit will be spent on research projects. The applications for the research will be invited from faculty at Mysore Medical College and will be decided by the faculty which project will be awarded. This appears to be running smoothly. Thanks to all my batch mates who have contributed generously.

On a personal note, Kolar N. Murthy and I have been contributing every year to MMC-GANA fund without failure (many years) and our treasurer; Kittane Ranganathhas been investing prudently. As you heard in the Business meeting of MMC/GANA, during our recently successfully completed South Africa/Victoria falls trip, funds have grown significantly.

I also adopted MMC radiology department in 2018 for obvious reason I donated $10,000 to be put in fixed deposit, the interest earned will be used for a prize money for the best post graduate student in radiology, it is also used to promote CME and other educational activities at our alma mater. I did not seek matching funds, as there are some issues with FCRA approval.

I wrote a special letter to SBI to get approval for transfer of funds to MAA trust.

I always think where I would be if not for Mysore Medical College. I plan to donate every year directly from RMD to MMC-GANA for specific purpose to promote educational activities and take advantage of tax deduction (as does Kolar Murthy). I hope MAA Trust get the FCRA approval in the meantime. We encourage all of our alumni members think of giving back to our institution. Above is one such way and we are sure many of you will take up similar projects as a personal endeavor and MMC/GANA is always there to match such worthy causes.

3. SWAASHA CHARITY ALLERGY & ASTHMA CLINIC’ {SAAAC) at MMCRI, MYSORE.

Introduction: The prevalence and incidence of asthma and allergic disorders are on the raise globally as well as nationally and locally. Based upon our own study in Mysore, the prevalence of such disorders is increasing at 10% each year in the city of Mysore. This is mainly due to lifestyle changes, Indoor pollution, traffic related auto pollution and population shift. Mysore district has an estimated prevalence of 20% population being affected (nearly 2, 50,000 persons) with such ailments. To meet the demands of the lower socioeconomic population affected, the idea of the ‘Charity allergy asthma clinic’ was born.
It was a Red letter day for the citizens of Mysore and surrounding areas, as well as MMCRI (Mysore Medical College & Research Institute) on January 11th 2017, when the FIRST full ‘CHARITY CLINIC FOR ALLERGY &ASTHMA’ in India and Karnataka in particular, was inaugurated by Dr Balasubramaniam MD, Chairman/Founder of Vivekananda Youth Movement, Sargur, Dr SAAAC was the dream child of Dr Pudupakkam K Vedanthan (Dr PK), MMC 1969 batch, founder/Chairman: International Asthma Services (IAS) (www.globalchestinitiatives.org) and it became a reality when IAS joined hands with MMCGANA (MMC Graduates Association of North America). The generous matching contribution from MMCGANA helped enormously to set up the Free clinic, which is actually delivering care at International standards. SAAAC is being efficiently managed through the Cheluvamba Women’s and Children’s Hospital (CWCH) and is located at the OPD dept of CWCH. The primary consultant is Dr Savitha Ramaraj, Professor of Pediatrics at MMCRI and a graduate of the Diploma Allergy Asthma (DAA) program at Christian Medical College, Vellore (www.cmch-vellore.edu).
Services rendered include comprehensive evaluation, education and treatment of various allergic disorders, asthma, eczema, food allergies for both children (primarily) as well as adults. Evaluation consists of Allergy Skin testing using standardized materials, computerized Spirometry, education both group and individual. Periodic ALL SERVICES RENDERED ARE 100% FREE TO EVERYONE.
SAAAC and IAS are highly appreciative of continued support promised by MMCGANA.
Report respectfully submitted by P K Vedanthan MD, Chairman, IAS, MMC1969
