Title: Children
Artist collectives: Yi Da (Mei Kei Ho)
Materials: Used children books, wood panels and metal
Size: Varied
Mei Kei’s art practice revolves around childhood memories and play. She chooses children’s used exercise books and textbooks for her sculpture. Clip art being pasted on the head of the sculpture to suggest how adults want their children to draw their ideal drawings found online. The piece comments on the relationship between knowledge and our education system due to social reality. Children are now studying without any creativity being cultivated. They are restricted to have their own way of thinking. They are not allowed to choose, they can only follow the system of a parents or schools design.
The artwork will be in .kl until Dec 5!

Title: Slow…ly
Artist collectives: Yi Da (Panney Wong Hui Lynn)
Materials: Invoice paper strips
Size: Varied
In my point of view, there will be several kinds of challenges faced by a fresh graduate, such as sharing the burdens of one’s family, overcoming financial problems, jobs, time management… all these challenges may turn you into a better person or you will be lost during the journey. I use leftover invoice paper, paste them layer by layer to form a human face. The function of the paper strips is to help fix the invoice paper while printing so that it won’t run off track. Once its function is done, it is considered unnecessary. We all started with nothing to be something, just like when we walk through the journey, we accumulate some knowledge, experience, emotion, relationships. These are like the paper strips, help to shape us.
You are what you’ve done. I hope every fresh graduate can shape the best version of themselves and overcome the problems, have a wonderful journey.
This lovely artwork is featured at .kl until Dec 5!

Title: The World That Surrounds Us
Artist collectives: Yi Da (Tay Wee Shiang)
Materials: Air dry clay, acrylic paint and satellite dish
Size: Varied
I decided to create a miniature sculpture, as a way to represent myself. My sculpture features a tiny alien explorer that is taking her first few steps into an “unknown, foreign, vast world” that is our universe. She chooses to rest atop on a satellite dish; it symbolizes connection to so many places on Earth and even to outer space. Her small figure is a contrast to the large space that is filled strange and gigantic creatures looking at her.
When creating this sculpture, I thought about our world that is filled with countless planets and layers, Earth is just one tiny star floating in space. And us, whether human or not, are just microscopic little beings living on a little star. It made me feel small to know that in our world and the universe outside our planet, is filled with infinite possibilities for us to learn, grow and explore.
This artwork is currently at .kl until Dec 5!

Title: Duduk kat Rumah
Artist collectives: Yi Da (Simon Chow)
Materials: Newspaper, tape and shellac
Size: Varied
The artwork symbolizes the current pandemic times, where everyone’s action and activities are being controlled and restricted by the media announcement. People have no choice but to follow what has been reported from media outlets in order to keep themselves safe from the virus. Even though the restriction has cause a lot of problems, not just physical but mentally as well, people can just stay in their home and wait for good news to arrive.

Title: Father
Artist collectives: Yi Da (Low Sue Woon)
Materials: Dress shirt, thread, rusty water, iron wire, coat hanger and car rear mirror
Size: Varied
This work describes a memory between my father and I. My father has always been an office worker, he works a 9 to 5 job, repeating the same routine every day. When I was a child, I thought that this kind of boring life could not be changed.
Now when I have grown up, when I want to decide my future path and pursue my dreams, suddenly I realize that I don't even know or have never asked whether my father had a dream he wants to pursue or not. The shirt in this work is worn by my father at work.
This made me realize that my father, who has always been with me, has a past that I have never participated in. He also had various visions for the future like me. Taking this opportunity, I made the portrait of my father in my memories, and used the thread sewn on the clothes to express the condolences that I could not express to him.
It symbolizes my father's identity, a second-hand car dealer.
The traces of rusty water on clothes mean that the body and mind are gradually being invaded and corroded by repeated life and environment. The rear mirror of the car means memories, reflections, and borrowed mirrors. And the line is a kind of an observational perspective and emotional expression about my father. The thread is pierced into the clothes as if I were using a pen to repetitively write expressions of condolences. In his labour day after day, whether his heart is twists and turns, or is he going smoothly.

Title: We are here to Stay Forever and Ever
Artist collectives: Yi Da (Andrew Pok Chong Boon)
Materials: Caution tape, wire mesh and wood
Size: 85cm (H) x 33cm (W) x 20cm (D)
The sculpture entitled “We are Here to Stay Forever and Ever” produced by the 10 artists from Yi Da for the Sekutoo exhibition, presents point of views on today’s world through characters we encounter day-in-day-out in private and public spaces.
The sculpture I produced as part of the Yi Da collective piece consists of a small human figurine mummified in red and white caution tape. The piece suggests one of the characters that we often come across in our everyday life, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic in Malaysia. It depicts the recent living conditions and emotional problems of the people as we saw on the media or experienced directly. Such fragile character is hidden silently among us in need of social attention and care.

Our collaborative work is inspired by the foundation of the collaboration word itself, which is compatibility and understanding between individuals. Fundamentally, we chose the tree roots as a main subject matter to symbolize strong, sturdy, and robust character. The interpretation of the roots character is a metaphor of our collaborative work.
Coming from different styles and way of working individually, we try to produce an artwork by combining the ideas and techniques in order to place each other’s identities in an orderly manner. Technically we combine the use of bright colors, hard edges, flat colors, repetitive lines and silk screen prints to produce this masterpiece.

Jendela TEMU is a recent work by us, using acrylic and collage on plywood. The idea sparked when we were far apart during MCO. That is how the initial concept by producing an artwork separately and later combining and assembling it together. There are four different styles combined, which represent Rais Azmi with his realistic stroke in a gloomy mood, contradict with naïve pop by Aimman Hafizal, then ambiguity between dot and flat color by SM Raja and digital painting by Epyowe which has made this work unite in harmony. The main subject in this artwork is an image of a child holding a brush, conceptualized in a window to highlight the narrative of our shared dream story (to become an artist), in different ways, approaches, and backgrounds but still within the same purpose and direction.
PerTEMUan is about all the TEMU members’ portraits in one piece of artwork. Most of us are not from the same class at university. Moreover, we were not even in the same circle before. However, fate has brought us together. If you look at the work, there are 4 missing puzzles. It represents our ex-members who have left the studio and that we are still missing our previous members who has left us due to many factors. We are inspired by the concept of the puzzle because it symbolizes attachment and connection. Hope we all can berTEMU again.

Bamboo
Site-specific
2021
In the early age of man, societies were capable of utilizing a wide range of resources into shaping and marking their environment symbolically. When we are talking about the theme of heritage and cultural identity, it is by far the closest subject matter that an artist can approach in their art-making process. It is rooted in their own background and history. Another important element is the working space where the artist performs their daily rituals of art making. Due to recent issues, it had widened our scope to explore an environment and presented the challenges and opportunities to recreate the ‘Lansaran’ in several sites. Since it is an experimental and progressive artwork, the specified space will be the place where all the crafting work takes place.
It was brought to our attention, the major element that we want to highlight is to attract the audience to participate in this art installation. We believe when the diversity of creativity merged, the understanding and unity within the collective was associated. It is not just a functional art, but it is also an eye-opener for the public to see how creative energy is being brought under one roof. The installation is accessible for everyone regardless of their background and origin. It is created to celebrate the aesthetic value of nature to a wider audience, where they can sit, walk around it, and experience the structure first-hand.
While this is a new experience for us in experimenting with bamboo, we realize how convenient it is to use it as a main material for the construction. It is an eco-friendly material, where once the exhibition is over, the bamboo can be reused for other purposes, thus emitting zero pollution unlike other materials like cement or plasters. The high accessibility of getting the bamboo has given us an advantage to expedite the construction process.

The collective’s intention leads to the situation of surreal scenarios that brings an ephemeral situation to the audience itself as they create the narrative of the artwork. The happening forces the audience to act as a performer and as proof to the artwork in which they experience the site-specifics. The surreal scenario comes with an action of absurdity that questions the poetical conversation between the audience and objects.
ENIGMATIC LAND
by Studio Kotak Lampu
Oil On Canvas
183 x 152 cm
2021
The study and process of “Enigmatic Land” artwork is a reformation of the visual interpretation of five of us. Coming from different styles and practices, this artwork is about an exploration of recreating images and composition of the visual by different individuals. In producing the artwork, it requires critical thinking in various aspects and research. The artwork progresses as a research through the construction of individual memories and emotions. The purpose of this study is to explore the influence of nature through a particular issue or in other words to understand how nature works.
In understanding the whole analysis and its concept, two important questions arises: What is the Kotak Lampu analysis on individual interpretation towards the physical and emotional characters in the ‘‘Enigmatic Land’’ artwork? What kind of inner world elements that we want to express in this painting? These are the questions addressed by the artist to have a better understanding in the process of art making.

It is a very challenging process, and it requires a high level of compatibility in the making of collaborative artwork. A two-way communication is needed in the early stages to discuss in exploring ideas, subject selection, visual processing, and direction to produce an artwork. Besides that, various sketches and experiments has been done during the process of forming the physical work. Processes of addition and subtraction of subject matters, geometric and organic shapes have been done repeatedly in achieving desirable visuals. Spontaneous and planning arrangement in colouring has created a different impact in the artwork.
Inspired by the famous statement “Stay at Home” (Duduk di Rumah) which was adopted by the government during the MCO, it has become a starting point in the process of producing this collaborative artwork highlighting the scope between man and time due to circumstances. The artist has created the subject matter, shape and object that illustrates interiors of the house in semi- abstract, which refers to as a symbol of mental confusion and emotions, living in a confined and isolated space for a long time when the pandemic occurs.

“In this exhibition, Empati Studio defines a ship as a benchmark or continuation to our collective life as an artist, muralist, and sculptor. The ship is just a metaphor of the complexity of our life journey as a collective.
The aim is to describe the concept, visualization processes, techniques, media, and forms in the making of a collective artwork while depicting a visual idea through the Ship. We are looking for an answer which contains a continuity of the artwork by enlightening our connectivity with the ship.
The Ship
It is not just a form of transportation but a symbolization of the journey of life. Highlights of the ship documentation is another pinnacle as an archive in looking at the changes that are happening to us in the decades ahead. It also accentuates the exploration of potential technical creativity as well as conceptually depicting the specific and authentic tendencies in art making .
Our contemporary approach in the making of this artwork is to showcase the multiple styles from realist and surrealist as well as demonstrating it in symbolism, metaphor, transformation, and deformation of a form. The ship has been divided into 11 divisions which represent 11 individuals in the Empati Studio. And the 11th work has its own unique style.
The complete set of artworks has become the backbone in a competitive collective like us. The ship has a complex creation in which employees who always have the nature of empathy for each other, help in navigating the ocean even without a direction or purpose, significance in seeking sustenance in the ocean in its own way; that is our real enjoyment. The world is like a vast ocean, we are like a ship sailing in the ocean, traveling in the middle of the ocean to find our own sustenance and to reap unexpected sustenance. Some are drowned but we are always there to save each other. We are willing to sail the ocean together because GOD never promised a calm sea or beautiful waves or sunny weather, but GOD always promised us a beautiful place at the end of every journey”.
