I finally got to watch Questlove’s brilliant documentary, “Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)”. This is a must-see. The fact that the footage from the Harlem Cultural Festival lay in a basement for 50 years is unconscionable. It speaks volumes to the ongoing systemic racism which the film explores, masterfully drawing parallels between the tumultuous 60s & our present time. And the heart of the film is a celebration of Black culture, community, strength, beauty, love & creativity. The original footage was wonderfully captured & the choice & pacing of the included performances & present interviews is stellar. I can’t imagine how difficult it must have been to choose from 40 hours of archival footage. The incredible performances include Stevie Wonder, The Staple Singers, Mahalia Jackson, Nina Simone, Sly & the Family Stone, Gladys Knight & the Pips, the 5th Dimension & more. Questlove has made a music doc masterpiece––socio-politically relevant, moving & inspiring. The Harlem Cultural Festival ought to have been a widely-celebrated historical event, every bit as monumental in its own way as Woodstock. Thank you for making such a meaningful work of art & giving the world a taste of the magic that unfolded over those 6 weekends in Harlem back in July 1969 🙏
