So this week we have started getting the ewes ready for tupping in October, the yearlings have been toxovax’d after we found out we suffer with this type of abortion, all ewes have been mineral bolused and the son has started learning to tail the ewes. They’ve been moved to fresh grass and will be moved every week now until mid pregnancy. This will give us the best chance of getting the best out of our ewes this next year. This season lambs are ready so if you would like to try some grass fed lamb please get in touch

So this week we are reseeding a field. We’ve had Pete back in with the lime as the ph of this field is very low. It’s so low we can’t apply all the lime in one go. We will be putting a short term ley in for 2-3 years after that we will have to reseed it again and put the remaining lime on then. Whilst Pete was here we did some more grass fields to improve their ph too. It’s a costly job to reseed, this 7acres will be costing the farm around £2000 by time I’ve paid for everything and that is with me doing some of the work.
In other aspects of the farm we will soon be introducing the rams to the ewes. The store cattle have been housed due to the lack of grass due to the dry summer. We have started selling lambs too. If you require lamb we will be sending some soon. We will also have sausages available. Sorry we haven’t updated for a while. Will try harder from now on

Sorry for the lack of posts lately, over the last month we’ve been very busy, shearing sheep along with more harvesting. Lambs and calves are growing well. We’ve started to cut thistles and the lambs have received vaccinations and fly sprays to prevent maggots. Lamb will be available very soon and pigs are growing on well too.

So over the last week we’ve been busy harvesting grass for next winter. Many thanks to everyone involved, it can be a pretty stressful job if the weather isn’t playing ball, luckily the weather has been good, all machines behaved and we should have some nice fodder. We still have some fodder to make yet. Remember if you need any meat for your summer bbq’s we can supply. More updates coming soon

So today at maesgwyn farms we’ve been applying fertiliser to the ground to help the grass to grow, it contains nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, these are the main nutrients it needs to grow, the silage land has also had some sulphur. The fields we take a crop of silage/ hay from have been turned off ready to cut in about a months time. We now need the rain that is forecast and for it to warm up so it grows really well for the cattle and sheep fodder for the winter.

So today at maesgwyn farms we made a start on the spring field work. We’ve had Pete in with his lime spreader to apply calcium lime to some of the fields. This will raise the ph of the soil and allow the grass to grow better and stop the lock up of vital nutrients in the soil. We’re still busy lambing and calving too. With the sun shining ewes and lambs have been turned out onto the fields. It won’t be long and we will be out with the fertiliser spreader to feed the grass some more nutrients to help the grass grow and grow next winters fodder supplies

So over the last week we at Maesgwyn farms have started lambing. It’s a very busy time of year here on the farm. Not an awful lot of sleep being had as we have to check on them regularly. We have also been pre movement TB testing some cattle ready to be sold. We won’t know the results of that until Monday. Due to the weather we can’t turn the ewes and lambs out into the fields so having to keep them indoors for a few more days.

The ewes are now receiving feed every day in preparation for lambing. The first picture shows twin bearing ewes which have been housed for about 10 days, the second picture shows some ewes scanned with single lambs, these are still out on grass and will be brought in on the point of lambing.

08/02/2021

So on Saturday all ewes and rams received their annual booster. The immunity will transfer to the unborn lamb and protect it for the first few weeks of life. Whilst in they also received a worm and fluke dose to again stop the fluke affecting the liver.
