just over here reliving those first days with my own newborns

In a world where a mom's work is often under-valued, let this be a reminder that all those little moments that sometimes seem mundane make all the difference. Those are the moments we will remember. Here are some of my favorite mundane moments this week:

-dance parties in the kitchen
-when they incorrectly flip every single pancake, but the look of pride on their face, because they made breakfast
-spontaneously going to a new park
-when your toddler gets so excited to help you switch the laundry even though it slows you down

Cheers to focusing on the moments that seem like nothing. What are some of your favorite simple moments?

Cradle cap looks like thick scaly, oily patches on a baby's scalp. It is painless and is not itchy. It is also very common and nothing to be afraid of.
With my babies, it worked well to lather their head in coconut oil for a few hours and then use a comb to scrape out the dry patches. Washing their head with a mild soap daily until it resolves may help. Unfortunately, sometimes it takes a few weeks to fully go away.

Did your babies experience cradle cap?

A sibling's bond can be so magical-and craving magical moments (like in this photo) can make the expectations of those first few weeks or months home with a new baby even more overwhelming than it already is.

Remember-two minutes before this photo was taken, the older brothers were jumping on the bed next to the baby and there were four baskets of laundry to be folded.

Reality will probably look very different than your expectations of your newborn and their older siblings. But when you freeze time in a photo like this and look back, you'll realize it was even better.

How do you know if you have a good latch? 👇

Here are a few things to watch for:
-fish lips: your baby's lips should not be tucked in, they should be flanged out
-audible swallowing: you will hear your baby suck, suck and then swallow milk (ahhh so gratifying)
-rounded ni**le: your ni**le should be rounded, not pinched or lipstick shaped when your baby unlatches
-tucked chin: your baby's chin should be up against your breast

And then hopefully, when they sleepily pull off after they finish, you'll see that little extra milk dribble out of their cheek as they drift off into their milk coma.

Swaddling is definitely something where the phrase, "practice makes perfect" rings so true. Here are some of my best tips after swaddling thousands of babies.

1. use their body weight to tuck those blanket corners in tightly.
2. don't be afraid to swaddle as tight as possible, it loosens fairly quickly
3. even if they are crying while you're swaddling, it doesn't mean they don't like it- almost 100% of the time they calm down shortly after
4. tuck their fists into the folds of the blanket so they are securely on their chest and their arms are not strapped down to their sides.
5. I love the velcro swaddles especially once they consistently break out of the classic blanket swaddle

My favorite products to make breastfeeding easier for a new mom:

1. The Brestfriend nursing pillow: firm enough to provide great support, adjustable, clips securely around your waist so it doesn't move, and a convenient little pocket to keep your necessities nearby.
2. Cooling gel pads for sore ni**les
3. Haakaa: when you remember to use it, this is awesome for collecting the extra milk that drips out of your other breast. You'd be amazed at how much wasted milk gets soaked into your nursing pads that could be saved in the fridge!

What other must-have breastfeeding tools did you love?

Why is the Vitamin K shot so important?
It is recommended that babies are given two medications at birth-one of them is Vitamin K. Vitamin K plays a critical role in helping blood clot. Giving this medication at birth helps babies blood clot which is always important, but especially at birth when they may have bruising and swelling.
