💜 TANNY BUNNY love story. Part 2.

…I returned to Moscow and lost the business card!

But I had no intention of giving up. And literally 2-3 days later, I found Tanya’s ear cuffs in my friend’s store! I asked if they had her contact information and I got a new business card. That’s when I started messaging her.

Engaging the beauty in conversation turned out to be not so easy, and for every 5 messages I sent, I usually received only one in return. Then, in February, I came to St. Petersburg again, this time to visit a friend. And that’s when I decided to give it one last try and invited her on a date. If she didn’t agree, I wouldn’t try anymore - I thought. But she agreed.

We met and talked for about 6 hours non-stop. We had an incredible number of common topics and, most importantly, values. “We are so lucky to have met each other - not everyone is so fortunate in a lifetime,” I thought.

Then, we would Skype every other day. I wanted to call her every day, but I was afraid of being too pushy. I lived from one call to another. I remember sending that same friend with whom I had wine to give her a warm pajama (when I found out that her apartment was cold). And after six months, Tanya came to live with me in Moscow.

And this is how Tanny Bunny story began!
By the way, we still keep the ear cuff that I bought on that fair. A green leaf - here it is in the photo.

💜 Did you know that Tanny Bunny story began as a love story? Here it is, told by my husband Stephan:

It was autumn 2017. I used to travel to St. Petersburg for fairs 1-2 times a month consistently. Usually, I would earn some money selling my silver ear cuffs there and leave, enjoying a semi-relaxing, semi-business trip.

At one of these fairs my friend came to visit me. We sat behind my booth, drinking wine quietly, feeling a bit melancholic, smiling softly, and having heartfelt conversations. It was the true St. Petersburg style.

The day had just begun, there weren’t many people yet, and the venue was spacious and white - like a winter sky. Then, I saw her: in a pink dress, with long red hair. Despite her brightness, she floated through this gloomy emptiness very organically and calmly - as if she had descended from the heavens like a cloud.

I was speechless, and she walked around, looking at the booths. She approached mine, and I started talking about ear cuffs. She nodded, saying she was familiar with them. Then, she moved on and sat at her own booth. My friend and I were deeply impressed by this enchanting fairy. And the thought in my head was that she was out of my league, but it was worth a try.

Well, I would regret it if I didn’t try, so I went to Tanya’s booth, seeing her jewelry. Vaguely, I remembered seeing something like that on a handmade marketplace. It turned out she also made ear cuffs. I started vividly telling her that I admired her work as a cuff maker, (bold exaggeration) and something else. I bought an ear cuff (how could I not, as a “fan”), took her business card (just in case there were any questions about the cuff, as if it really bothered me back then).

I returned to Moscow and lost the business card! 😱

All these ear cuffs were made by me a long time ago, and for various reasons they are not on sale now. But something new always comes to replace the old!



Summer is coming, and I found a few shells in my bins. And so I thought how great it would be to make a nautical-style ear cuff again!

I don’t know for sure yet whether it will be something based on my old works, or something completely new. So, I accept wishes! Write what you would like to see, and which of the old sea-style ear cuffs do you like the most?

Most often an artist masters one particular technique, and creates something within it. Some people manage to master several at once, combining, for example, wire wrap with polymer clay, galvanized leaves or dippity glass (I combine it with Angelina film). However, it rarely happens that someone works in two techniques at once, which are not related to each other at all. How did it happen that TANNY BUNNY features only ear cuffs, but in two different techniques?

The answer is that TANNY BUNNY is not just me, but several persons, including me, Stephan and our jewelers! After all, I also worked only in my own special technique until I met my husband Stephan, who was also engaged in ear cuffs, only silver ones. So, we just combined our skills and created a single brand dedicated to ear cuffs.

Here I have to admit that Stephan is an excellent entrepreneur, an average jeweler and no designer at all. So, creating new silver ear cuffs became my task, and I didn’t mind it at all! I really enjoyed my new job. Firstly, there are much more opportunities for implementing your ideas (after all, not everything can be done in wire). Secondly, you do not need to make each copy with your own hands. It is enough to make a jewelry model only once, and the rest is the jeweler's concern. Just a creative person's dream!

And then the inevitable happened: I wanted to use my secret ingredient, Angelina film, in silver jewelry! This is how our famous fish ear cuff appeared!

And how do you like the combination of silver and Angelina film? Should we continue like this?

HOW WE FOUGHT WITH ALIEXPRESS

Life has taught: if you work well, you will have customers; and if you work very well, then the fruits of your labors will soon be on AliExpress. (And that what happened to all these ear cuffs ☝️) Entrepreneurial Chinese generally do not care that you have some kind of copyright there, and that for some reason you do not want to share it.

The marketplace, in general, does not care either. Of course, there is a "Report product" button, but this is just for show. This action does not bring any result (I checked). As it turned out, you can achieve justice from AliExpress only by sending an official request to their representative office.

Unfortunately, it's almost impossible for an average person to figure this out on their own, so we had to pay about $500 to lawyers to get the case right. But even they were fooled by AliExpress for a whole year! It took a long time to prove my authorship. Whatever we gave them: the original photos, the first publications, even some screenshots of the correspondence. And now, after more than a year, we received the long-awaited answer: the products we complained about have been removed!

But... the trouble is that during this time a bunch of new ones have already appeared. So, the fakes, as they were on this site, have remained, only now in other stores. And in order to remove them, you need to pay the lawyers again and repeat the whole procedure from the beginning. The result is so-so, to be honest.

In general, the good news is that in principle it is possible to fight AliExpress. The bad news is that it takes a lot of money. Unfortunately, we are not yet ready for such regular expenses. I hope that someday Tanny Bunny will become a big brand, and our tough lawyer will sue them all for a lot of money. In the meantime, I decided that since I can’t beat the knockoffs, I’ll use them for my own good, and using the example of Chinese fakes, I’ll show how beautiful our original cuffs really are. So, I ordered all the stolen jewelry models from China, and I'm going to review each one. Don't miss it - should be fun!

Recently I received such a message on Etsy: “Could you tell me how this item differentiates from the other silver dragon earrings? Other listings have them for $20-$40.”

Well, firstly it’s the materials. Those dragons have silver color, but they are bijouterie. If you look at the materials in these listings, you’ll see that they are galvanised brass, steel or something else. Our dragon is solid 925 silver. Unfortunately such a big ear cuff made of silver just cannot cost 40$.

Secondly, sadly, many of them are made in China. Though Etsy was supposed to be a market for unique handmade items, it’s full of cheap Chinese stuff. There are even Chinese fakes our ear cuffs there! 👿 And we produce everything ourselves. It’s more expensive, but the quality is much better too!

Actually, there’s nothing bad in cheap bijouterie, if the design is not stolen. But if you can afford something better - why not? 😊
