We had such a great time at our Ayurveda Retreat at Lake Tahoe!

We learned so much about ourselves and the world around us and also had a lot of fun. It was an opportunity for us to meet our fellow Vaidyas, and be in a place where we could just relax and focus on healing, without having to worry about anything else.

It was also really cool to hang out with other people who were there for the same reason: to get away from their daily lives, and just be around people who want to discuss & learn Ayurveda.

We make Ayurveda wisdom adaptable and easy so that you can have health & happiness - that's what we do in our workshops and gatherings. Thank you for hosting us! We had a great time!

Happy Onam!
Onam is a festival of joy and prosperity in Kerala. Celebrated beyond the bounds of any religion, it offers a remembrance of an honest and prosperous bygone era. Onam celebrates the myth of the return of the King - Mahabali - who visits Kerala every year to see his people. Onam is celebrated with pookalam (floral arrangements), pulikkali dances, and a sumptuous Sadya (the feast!)

The human body is a work of art – the most complex system ever created. It is engineered in a magnificent way that it heals on its own most of the time. Yet, to maintain the efficiency of the system, a delicate yet systematic natural approach is imperative. Ayurveda suggests some very practical solutions for sustaining the healthy performance of the body as a part of the daily routine – Abhyanga, Utsadhana, and Vyayama. Read on to understand how the Ayurveda self-care regime Abhyanga redefines the concept of positive health and gives it a new dimension beyond the intake of medicines.

What is Abhyanga?

Imagine the 5 million touch receptors in your skin getting stimulated most delicately and soothingly. The thought itself is so relaxing and refreshing. A very simple yet sophisticated therapy that has curative, palliative, and hygienic aspects, Abhyanga or self-massage with oil is suggested to be practiced daily, in Ayurveda. A healthy person desirous of rejuvenating the body, mind, and spirit should invariably resort to Abhyanga every day, before bath.

Oil is known as Sneha 'Love' in Ayurveda which is also a synonym for love and affection. So, Abhyanga can very well be perceived as the natural ability of the oil to affectionately embrace the body with its exquisite nature. An exotic self-care regimen that nourishes the body and mind alike, Abhyanga is the easiest way to understand and acknowledge your body perfectly.

There is a saying “Cooking is love made visible”, while cooking a meal for one’s dear, the framing of mind of the individual cooking the meal and his/her sentiments is of foremost priority as it influences the quality of the meals.

Home-made meals are made with a key component Love, which is irreplaceable and far-fetched to compare to a meal served in a restaurant by strangers. Consequently, it is essential to cook constantly for our young ones as the food made for them should be new, made with good intentions and a bunch of love.

In Ayurveda Ahara or Food is one of the three pillars of life; the other two are sleep & regulated sexual life.

Ayurveda highlights the material quality of food but places even more significant emphasis on the choice of food, its processing and cooking, and traditions for nutritional eating.⠀

Charaka Samhita depicts the eight principles of Ahara vidhi ⠀

1. Prakriti (nature of food articles)⠀
2. Karana (preparation)⠀
3. Samyoga (combinations)⠀
4. Rashi (portion)⠀
5. Desha (habitat and environment)
6. Kala (time aspect)⠀
7. Upayoga Samstha (regulations of use)⠀
8. Upayokta (the user)⠀

The standard portion in Ayurveda is the quantity of food that serves to both hands enfolded jointly. After eating, our tummy should have 1/3 food, 1/3 fluid, and 1/3 air. In different phrases, our belly should be 2/3's full. If we eat fast, we won't feel pleased with 2/3's full. But if we delay 20 minutes, prolonged sufficiently for our body to begin digesting the meals, we'll find that we don't need to overeat ourselves.

There is also specialized guidance on food qualities and intake based on the digestive capacity of a person, and the variety of food that is being consumed.

Take care of yourself, be healthy, and always believe you can be successful in anything you truly want. Use your energy wisely.
In Ayurveda, the bio-energies which cannot be seen with the naked eye, yet are experienced at various levels are explained as The Tridoshas or Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. As per Ayurvedic principles, a perfect harmony between the Tridoshas in the body contributes to the health and any imbalance causes disease. But these descriptions are so vague that it leaves many basic unexplained questions as to what it is. To get into a deeper level of analysis, we must start afresh beginning with the origin and evolution of the theory itself.

Happy Independence Day India!
On its 75th Independence Day, we wish India a great & glorious journey to the future.
Here is a poem by Rabindranath Tagore, the superlative poet and a great son of India.

Where The Mind Is Without Fear

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high
Where knowledge is free
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments
By narrow domestic walls
Where words come out from the depth of truth
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way
Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit
Where the mind is led forward by thee
Into ever-widening thought and action
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.

It is fascinating to see the portrayal of the happy and unhappy life integrated into the very definition of Ayurveda because they have a bearing on health and illness. The Caraka Samhita distinguishes between happy and salutary life. The happy life (Sukham Ayu) ushers to individual happiness whereas the salutary life (Hitam Ayu) is focused on higher meaning and purpose in life, the well-being of the Universe.

Moments that matter in life are derived from consciousness. Consciousness, trailed by its manifested principle Prana (life force or movement), is the fundamental attribute of the universe. The life that we consciously live is shown in our human body. Ayurveda reinstates the body-mind connection. We need to be mindful of the fact that happiness is found in harmony and not in pleasure.

In Ayurveda, the purpose is to replace adverse thoughts with positive ones, with a concept depicted as Pratipaksha Bhavana. This implies thinking thoughts of an opposing quality. This emphasis on positivity is regarded as critical for health and wellbeing because of the influence of a positive mind on the body

It’s ‘our perception’ of life. Happiness is a choice, and the things we choose to do, be, have & believe determine whether we are happy, or not. Ayurveda Acharya (scholar), Charaka mentions “PRATYAKSHYA” as one of the fourfold methods of understanding. Acharya Charaka defines direct observation (Pratyaksha) as a situation of acquiring knowledge as a result combination of the soul (Atma), Sense organs (Indriya), Mind (Mana), and object (Artha). It conveys that, only by seeing an object with the eyes an understanding cannot be acquired. For that healthy soul and mind must be with the person. We need to align ourselves, think, and act accordingly in our life. Dream big & also most importantly make sure we pave our way to reach it.⠀

Ahara is one of the three sub-pillars of life according to Ayurveda. While quick fixes might work, there is no alternative to a proper diet, balanced workout & good lifestyle choices to attain & maintain health.

Traditionally, mental health was as significant as physical health. It was taught that to live a healthy & productive life, one had to balance their mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. ⠀

Ailments may also be understood as a manifestation of frustration, at not being able to fulfill "the values of life". The body & mind are mutually involved in the catalyzation of ailments. ⠀

As well as taking into account the mind's complementary role in ailments, the process takes into account the behavioral principles that can accelerate healing. Ayurvedic principles become significant in the context of the prevailing paradox of the modern body-mind view. ⠀

In Ayurveda, the universe is comprised of qualities from the five ingredients- Earth, Fire, Water, Air, and Space. These elements are existing in various amounts, shaping up to our dosha (body constitution).

Ayurveda equips us with a knowledge of who we are through the doshas- Vata, Pitta, & Kapha. Every person was born with an individual proportion of the doshas, which resulted in the frame and extent of our body, our mental and emotional inclinations, likes and dislikes, and character.⠀

These are typically expressed by our mental, physical, and emotional features. So, Ayurveda teaches practices that are ideal for your state of well-being. Recognizing our natural mind-body composition, that those essences are pivotal to whoever we are, and that we were born to exist in the world uniquely, leads to self-acceptance.⠀
