Hey District 60! My sincerest appreciation and thanks to all who supported and voted for me. It was an incredible experience. The runoff is now between Mike Olcott and Glenn Rogers on May 24. Each of them has their own unique strengths and legislative priorities. Let's do our job and keep up with them this next few months. This is a big deal! We are picking our next State Representative in May, maybe for many years to come. Let the best man win!

Hello, this is Lucas.
I'm not a fan at all of property taxes. There is a movement to eliminate them altogether (which I am open to), but that tax revenue would have to come from somewhere. My thoughts are to have a homestead exemption that we can actually feel. If you've ever had an ag exemption, it's easy to see what a great tool it is for landowners. Honestly, ag exemptions are the only way most people can afford to own large tracts of land. Let's do the same with our homestead exemption and increase it's usefulness. My plan would be to leave property taxes alone for commercial property, rental property, and oil and gas (for now). But our homes are different! How is it that if you pay 5 or 6 thousand dollars a year in property taxes, that is a reasonable or even a low amount? This needs to change. I will submit legislation that gives a tax break on our homesteads for reductions of up to $3,000.00.
The big question is how to make up for lost tax revenue? One answer is wise spending. I don't know about you, but I can't buy everything I want anytime. I have to budget and spend wisely. Our government should be no different. Another reality is that there is additional revenue coming in already with the new home construction, businesses moving here, and rising values. I'm open to other ideas as well as long as they don't overburden the people. Once we paid 20-30 years to pay off our homes, we should be able to enjoy them without the equivalent of a payment by the taxes due each year!
