Today is a year...
I’ve learned so much about grief and about what I've needed and will continue to need as I make a different life for myself. We don’t get to decide what happens to us and this is what happened to me.
Some of what I learned is that it is important to love as deeply and as much and as often as you can… When you feel something powerful about another human being, share it. On my last day with Gary we happened to have had a wonderful, romantic, fun day together and I told him many times throughout the day how much I loved him. Our life wasn't perfect, nor were we individually perfect. However, I'm so glad that Gary left this earth knowing how truly loved he was. So, lesson #1 is to always let the significant people in your life know how much you love them.
-I wish I had more videos of Gary, so if you don’t have videos I suggest you start taking them now. Whenever I see him on a video it warms my heart like nothing else. It’s painful but it’s the best I have and I'll take it. Be that annoying person that pulls out their phone and gets some moments on video.
-I cherish all the cards that I have from Gary and those that I have written to him over the years. It’s another beautiful reminder of all the love that we shared. Keep on writing to your loved ones!
-Don’t do grief alone. If you’re fortunate enough to have a loving family and friends then I suggest you let them love you and nurture you. I’ve embraced all the love that has been given to me and I am so grateful and humbled.
Joining a bereavement group has been life changing. This fantastic group of people understand my pain and loss differently than others. Joining a support group has been crucial in helping me process this tragic loss.
I learned 2 things always exist… we can have joy and at the same time, be sad that our loved one is no longer here. These things exist at the same time. I have learned that somehow I have to go on and live as full and happy a life as I can.
We all find a way to memorialize our loved ones and I was blessed to love a man that was bigger than life and I will keep his legacy going.

On Tuesday June 30th I lost this beautiful man, my husband, and absolute love of my life. We’ve been together for 23 years and I cannot imagine getting through my life without him. With the support of our 3 daughters, our wonderful friends and family I will somehow find the strength to get through this. My grief knocks me out and then I breathe again when the wave of pain passes. I wanted my community to know and sharing this on social media feels right to me. I am forever changed but still feel blessed to have had this kind of love. Gary was my everything and I adored him. Thank you everyone for sending me so much love and support. It helps.❤️❤️

Coffee & Commitment 01/01/2020

Happy New Year!

Recently I've heard people saying “Let’s make 2020 our best year ever”. That’s terrific but how do you make that happen? Wouldn’t it be wonderful if writing or saying that intention were a guarantee to get it done? Well, it’s not…without a plan they are just words and hopeful dreaming. I’m all about hope but you need more than just words!

As an action oriented person and coach to my clients I believe in vision, setting an intention, and having concrete steps to get there.

Let’s look at the person seeking love and a relationship. What are they going to do that’s different than last year? Wishing for it more is not the answer! My suggestions would be to:
Get online (if they’re not on already). I know people say that it’s dreadful but if you’re single and looking to meet someone you need to try this route as a means to an end
Join a group where you can meet like-minded people. If you play tennis, join a group, if you love cooking take a course, join something!
Find an organization where you can give your time. If you feel you don’t have any extra time then how can you even consider dating? Consider a modest commitment to an organization that has meaning for you. You can do good work and meet people that share your passion for the same cause.
Exercise a few days a week, preferably at a gym and remember to smile a little when you’re there!
Now let’s talk about an individual with financial worries. My suggestions for them would be:
Set a budget and make it something tight but add some treats so that you can maintain it.
Be honest with yourself when setting your budget otherwise you cannot achieve success.
Find some things you can do and accomplish this year that won’t cost you much money. What about taking a class or learning a second language? Check out Groupon, ClassPass and CourseHorse. There are ways to stay busy, and grow while still staying within your budget.
What can you do that is productive and inexpensive?

Lastly, this is what I suggest for someone trying to lose weight:
Set a plan that has some room for fun. If you create a plan that is too rigid you will have the urge to go wild anytime you’re feeling deprived.
Of course there are always people that want to get in shape and have tried time and time again. What can you do differently this coming year?
Everyone has joined a gym, sworn off sugar and carbs, made a plan etc. Have you considered joining a support group for people going through the same yo-yo dieting that you have?
Again, be honest with yourself...creating a plan that is too hard to maintain will discourage you.
The key to achieving your goals is to set goals you can manage. This is not an email trying to sell you on my groups but it is an offer for you to try something you haven’t done in the past. Consider my virtual support group as a tool to achieve your goals.

When I was struggling with my eating disorder I too had tried everything and it wasn’t until I found a group with a great facilitator and people going through the same thing that I was able to get the help and support I needed. We shared our struggles with food and together we helped each other conquer the battle. That was 30 years ago and I’ve been practicing this way of eating ever since. I am happy to say that I am fit and not deprived...yes, I eat!

For all those that say let’s make 2020 the start to our best decade ever, I’m right there with you, now lets’ make a plan to ensure it!

Again, wishing you a Happy & Healthy New Year!
Be safe!

Xox,

Ellen

This week I’ve had multiple conversations with clients about going home to their families and asking for help to prepare them for some of the potentially triggering conversations. Why is it that when we go home we become 15 years old again? Arguments and patterns that were in place then are still present today unless we change the script. Learning to speak to family or old friends (that are like family) in a different way is work and if you make a conscious decision to change the way in which you respond to each other, you can write a different ending to the same old story. Just because you’ve done things a certain way for what seems like forever, doesn’t mean that you are stuck in that dynamic. You’ve done the dance one way and when you learn some new moves you will step on toes but when you practice you eventually get it right and the choreography is beautiful.

When someone says something that is hurtful, try responding differently than what you’ve done in the past. Instead of lashing out you might try, “that didn’t feel good, or I’ve learned a lot about myself recently and I’m actually really sensitive so let’s try and talk to each other differently, or I love you and want to get along so let’s try and be gentle and kind to each other”.

As Brene Brown says “ Clear is kind, unclear is unkind”. Try letting your friends and family know what you’re trying to accomplish by this new way of relating to each other.

Be kind to each other.

Xox,

Ellen
