50% of all academy players will be released the by the age of 16…

That’s an eye opening statistic right!?…

Over my career I’ve seen so many talented players drop out the game early. For those who only see the glamorous side… Football can be a ruthless industry.

The gold medalists (top players) at youth and school boy level don’t always necessarily go all the way. When you see podium players at a young age, you sometimes worry about the first time they’re going to have to overcome a difficulty. If the first time is later, sometimes they are not able to deal with it. It’s often the silver and bronze medalists who constantly have to overcome problems and they’re the ones that tend to come through.

You have to be super resilient if you’re to have a chance of making it (at any level!) … If you do grab that brass ring, the rewards will be worth the hardship!

It’s about patience and waiting for that moment when an opportunity might arise…. this moment is rarely etched on the calendar! But there must be a belief it’s coming. You must put the work in and pound the rock (My old coach John McDermott used to say!)

Without a schedule, plan or pathway, the waiting for ‘this moment’ can seem long and chaotic… but that’s football! It’s about being able to survive and thrive in ‘chaos’ and uncertainty “playing on that fine line’ and ‘locating inner resources when the chips are down’. This is why it’s my job and our job as coaches to ‘build people’ and help players by modelling this behavior, culture and environment.

No matter what age, situations arise in life to test how bad we want our dreams. Believe, keep pounding that rock and go after it! Trust Gods timing… You have what it takes! ✨⚽️🙏🏽
