Hawcoat and Newbarns Conservative Councillors
Promoted by Les Hall, Niyall Phillips and Roy Worthington of 93 Market Street, Dalton in Furness
🌳 Residents of Infield Park, and the wider community, have rightly shared concerns regarding the planned felling of trees on their Street.
👂 On Thursday, Niyall and Roy attended a public meeting with residents and supporters to hear and understand their concerns!
✋ 🛑 Following discussions with the Highways Team, we are glad that Niyall and Roy were able to agree a pause to the planned felling until residents have been appropriately consulted!
🌳🏡 We’ll keep you posted on any updates!

Stay safe!
Storm Isha is soon to hit the UK with gusts of wind of up to 80mph. Like the rest of the UK, Cumbria has yellow rain warnings and amber wind warnings in place.
Please stay safe in this weather. I’ve compiled a list of emergency contacts that you might need below.
Our gritting crew have collectively travelled over 840 miles in the early hours of this morning, sprinkling a coating of grit on our pritoty roads ready for vehicles to crunch it into an ice melting solution!
Before setting off on your journeys, please check…
✅ Your tyres are the correct pressure
✅ Any ice or snow is fully cleared from your vehicle
✅ You’re stocked up on plenty of windscreen wash
✅ You have extra supplies with you such as a warm change of clothes or a blanket in case of emergency
…and remember to keep a safe braking distance in between you and the vehicle in front of you.
Safe travels all! 💛
Update: Many thanks to those from the Woodland Trust who have been extensively looking and ensuring the area is safe. They have found no evidence of traps in the Woods themselves but there still could be dangers in the wider quarry area.
Unfortunately we’ve had a number of messages about snare traps being laid in How Tun Woods. Please be take extra care if you are visiting with your families and pets.
We have contacted a number of stakeholders regarding this issue and will keep you updated with any response.
Great opportunity to get involved with!
Merry Christman to all! 🎄🎅
👏 Many thanks to all of those who continue to work today whether that emergency services, armed forces, doctors, nurses, carers, council employees and those standing by on call too! Thank you for all that you do!
A multi-agency response is continuing after a major incident was declared to minimise challenges which heavy snowfall is having on the county’s road network.
Agencies are continuing in their efforts to assist those affected by the snow with the Highways teams from Cumberland Council and Westmorland & Furness Council continuing to clear priority routes so those impacted can be supported.
Police are continuing to urge people not to travel unless it is necessary, particularly those considering travelling in the South Lakes and Millom areas, due to the challenging road conditions.
Motorists are reminded that highways crews have to clear the snow from the road first before gritters can follow to put salt down, so even if a snowplough has been along a road it can still be treacherous until it has been treated.
Agencies are also urging people not to travel to Cumbria tomorrow if not absolutely necessary as road conditions will continue to be extremely challenging.
Superintendent Andy Wilkinson, Cumbria Constabulary, said: “We are continuing to see challenging conditions in Cumbria.
“Agencies across the county have been working hard and will be into the night in response to the impact of heavy snowfall.
“We are aware of a number of incidents in which highway teams and those assisting in the efforts to support those affected by the snow have been verbally abused.
“We understand people’s frustration during this time; however, agencies are working hard to improve the situation in Cumbria and are also facing the challenging road conditions when responding.
“The snow today ended up being much more significant than forecast and the amber warning that was put in place this afternoon is in place until midnight and, with a yellow warning from snow and ice tomorrow, we expect to continue to see challenging road conditions whilst these warning are in place. Therefore, we continue to ask people to not travel and to only do so if absolutely necessary.”
A number of community venues have been opened to offer support to those impacted by the heavy snow fall.
We ask if you are attending to not attend in your vehicle, leave this in a safe position and head to the venue.

Many people have been in contact about the sudden closure of Pulse Pitches
The loss of one of our few winter training provisions without any notice or warnings has caused immense inconvenience and uncertainty for lots of grassroots teams and for people who want to keep active
Further uncertainty around receiving pre payments back are also causing concern
That’s why Cllr Niyall Phillips asked an urgent question at council yesterday, and pressed the council to step in and take control to get the pitches open and playing again, so that clubs and members of the public can continue to keep active!
Discussions are ongoing, but we need urgent action and that’s what we will be working with others to do!
For our tomorrow, they gave their today. We will remember them.

Barrow Town Council Approves funding to support Local Events
The newly-formed Barrow Town Council met for the second time on the 18th July 2023 and discussed a packed agenda including proposals on Town Twinning, Water Safety and consultations from Westmorland and Furness Council. The Council also outlined funding proposals for a number of new initiatives including £50,000 to support local events to be held in the Barrow Town Council Area from August until April 2024, which was unanimously supported by Councillors representing all wards.
The aim of the Event funding is to provide events for the benefit or residents, encourage our creative sector, encourage our cultural and heritage community and invest in our local economy. A busy programme of events is already in place throughout this summer in Barrow, and the Town Council have made their offer of support to enable access for as many Barrovians as possible. Grants of up to a maximum of £2,500 is to be made available to local organisers from the 31st July 2023.
Cllr Niyall Phillips proposed the funding to Council and said ‘This funding is being made available to promote events within Barrow for Local Residents and Visitors to the area to support the local economy. Hopefully we can start to replicate the success other towns have had with similar funding pots and give the community opportunities to come together and celebrate Barrow!’
Event Organisers should contact the Town Clerk, Mrs Lesley Smyth via email to [email protected] to request a copy of the application form and guidance for applications.
