In the journey of cancer recovery, it all starts with the delicate dance of energy balance. Before you dive into exercise, nutrition, or mastering sleep patterns, it’s crucial to understand your new normal. Your energy isn’t an endless resource; think of it as a precious reserve that needs careful management. You can’t refuel if the tank’s always running on empty.

This is a time to reacquaint yourself with your body, to learn where your new limits lie, and to respect the signals it’s sending you. Recovery is about recognizing that after cancer, your boundaries have shifted. And that’s perfectly fine.

Take the time you need for YOU. This process is challenging, but now you hold the reins. Prioritize self-focus as you navigate this path; it’s not selfish, it’s necessary for your healing. It’s okay to pace yourself – recovery is a marathon, not a sprint.

“Is this feeling normal and how long will it last?“

It’s indeed normal to feel this way after having cancer. The duration and persistence of such feelings can vary significantly; for some individuals, the fatigue may last for a few months, for others, it can extend to two years or more, and in some cases, it might never completely go away.

It’s important to note that one of the key strategies to manage this, is working on energy balance. Focusing on how you allocate and conserve your energy, can be crucial in improving your overall well-being.

That’s why, in the ‘BALANCE after cancer course’ we start by understanding your nervous system. That’s the system that’s responsible for braking and accelerating, and therefor impacts your energy balance massively. In the first weeks we focus on making sure your nervous system becomes balanced again, but what does that mean?

Are you ready to dive in and learn more about your energy balance? I’ll coach you every week for eight weeks towards a balanced nervous system, so you can start working on your recovery.

5 ways to battle fatigue after cancer - FIT & STRONG after cancer 19/10/2023

Back when I just started my Oncology Physio Therapist practice in The Netherlands, a family friend recovering from breast cancer called me asking for some guidance, she was doing ok, but struggling with fatigue. She was dreading to go into yet another care process with an oncology physical therapist like me and having to make appointments two or three times a week. She just wanted to know what she could do so she could recover on her own terms in her own time. So i put some basic advice and some tips in writing and send it to her. She was very thankful and started to do better.

A couple of months later I got a message from someone I didn’t know about the document I send her. It turns out she took my draft and gave it to a lot of fellow survivors she knew were struggling with the same thing. Unknowingly I put this info out there which people were actually using, so I decided to follow up with the people I could track down. They were all super grateful and I got a lot of feedback on things I could add to the guide, like it was something i was developing. I wasn’t, but it got me thinking that maybe it could be a way to help many more survivors who weren’t going to seek a therapist, but would greatly benefit from some guidance.

I decided to put the work in and create something that would allow me to help many more people then only those who came to my practice. If you take it seriously, stick to the advice I give and do all the assignments and exercises, however trivial they may seem, I’m confident you’ll be a lot less fatigued, regain a sense of control, find out where your new boundaries are and overall feel better because you can once again do the things you want to do.

That’s how this free guide was born:

In science there are five types of fatigue described. By recognizing the type of fatigue you're experiencing, you can work on a solution more effectively. For example, if you're physically tired, it may not be wise to engage in intense physical activity, or you might need to adjust your approach. On the other hand, when dealing with mental fatigue, exercise might be the solution.

Take the quiz to find out from what type of fatigue you suffer the most and learn what you can do to improve.
