Tom Callahan Author
I'm an aspiring fantasy author working on the 2nd draft of book 1 of my trilogy.
First draft of the first installment of my new serialized story. All feedback appreciated.
Volume 1. Chapter 1. Earth 1713 June 12th 2019 5:17 PM. Connor Flynn rolled out of bed and staggered towards his alarm clock. He had decided a few years ago that the clock couldn't be next to his bed anymore...
Ok so while I've enjoyed these types of posts in the past. I never thought I would make one. The. ASK ME ANYTHING ABOUT MY WORLD post. I've always been a story based writer who sparsely world built as I went. However for my new story I think I have such a detailed complex and bizarre little world. I legitimately believe I could answer any question about it. So stump me if you can.
So I'm starting a new group. Tell me what you thnk of this concept.
This Group is my own personal experiment for a different kind of storytelling. A combination of serialized o stories and extensive world building. Much of the 🌎 building takes the form of short articles akin to wiki pages. These pages detail aspects of the complex mythology of the world. Ranging from profiles of enhanced races and creatures to details of the magic system to profiles of prominent heroes and figures As this world is a strange mix of modern and medieval technology these articles will be presented as in world references available to the citizens. The stories In the world will be a string of serialized short stories of various lengths. The stories will offer basic info on these areas while offering the reader the option to explore the subjects further at their own pace and level of interiest. My goal at this early stage is to focus on world building first providing info on the world one piece at a time. The purpose of the group is for people to aid me in this experiment by critiquing the entries and stories. letting me know what works or is interesting, what characters or types of characters they would like to see explored and suggesting their own additions to the lore.
Looking for people to read the prologue I just wrote. 795 words and just tell me on a scale of 1-10. If you find it intriguing at all and if it would make you want to read more. Not sure how to describe the genre. Definitely a type of fantasy but the story starts in 2019 New Jersey. Grateful for any help and feedback.
MUSICAL THEATRE FANS.
So due to some burn out, I'm taking a break from the second draft of my novel. After revisiting some of the old songs I wrote, yesterday, I've decided to revisit my long neglected musical endeavor. Based on the Count of Monte Cristo. Of course in the interim someone already wrote a musical based on that book. But it wasn't very good and never made it to Broadway. And it wouldn't be the first time different people wrote musicals based on the same book. This first song is the opening number. Our hero Edmund Dantes has just been informed he is being promoted to ship captain at the tender age of 19. He is like and admired by most and soon to be married to the love of his life. This song is called splendid life. There is a dark foreboding about it for those who know the story as none of the things foretold in the song will ever happen for poor Edmund as some petty jealous men will ensure a much darker fate for him instead.
The song takes place on the deck of the ship and the parts where I sing in a deep voice are meant to represent the chorus of sailors. Again for those who have heard me sing in the past my voice is very out of shape from disuse and the vocal quality here is not good. It's the song i'm looking for feedback on. So please take 3:30 out of your day and give a bit of feedback. Much appreciated.
Who here are musical theater fans? Give a like or a comment.
I have written quite a few songs in my life. But not in a long time. This was the last one I ever wrote way back in the summer of 2000. Would like some feedback on it. For those who have heard me sing before yes my voice sounds like garbage here. Im very rusty, not warmed up, and have to be quiet. It's the song I want feedback on not the vocals. So pleas take 3:42 out of your day and give a listen. Thanks all.
Listened to the song Glass onion today for the first time in years. It struck me that the song is basically the Beatle's version of a sitcom flashback episode.
Messaged one of my favorite authors regarding an Easter egg in my book referencing his work. I got a positive response. Very Cool.
Perpetual anticipation is good for the soul but it's bad for the heart.
Sondheim.
Perpetual nonconformity for its own sake is in fact conformity.
You cant read up on Genghis Khan without being repeatedly told what a brutal monster he was. And while he could certainly be brutal I contend that his crimes were no worse than other great conquerors and tame in comparison to some. Such as Alexander. While you can find information on the atrocities committed by Alexander and Caesar etc. They are not at the forefront of every conversation as they are with Genghis. I have to assume that race was a factor in the depiction of these figures by historians.
