Queen Mary was a ‘fiddler’ of the highest calibre who took pleasure in
transforming her jewellery, such as changing pearls for emeralds, as with
the Grand Duchess Vladimir tiara. If she had a signature look, it was one
of change and modification: she was known to lengthen or shorten stomachers, wear a pin vertically that up until that point had only been
seen horizontally, recombine jewels belonging to the Crown with those
she owned – all of which suggested that she followed one dictum, her
own.

Featured here is Sir William Samuel Henry Llewellyn (1858–1941). Queen Mary, 1911–12.

Garrard & Co. The Coronation Necklace with the Lahore pendant, 1858. 25 graduated cushion-cut diamonds and the 22.48-carat Lahore diamond The necklace was made for Queen Victoria with diamonds from two Garter badges and the hilt of a sword. It acquired its distinguished name because it was worn by Queen Consorts at four coronations – 1902, 1911, 1937, and 1953. The famous Lahore diamond from the Timur Ruby necklace, which was presented to Queen Victoria in 1851, was made detachable so that it could be worn as a pendant on the Coronation Necklace.

Posted • We're looking forward to author and editor Ruth Peltason's webinar with next Thursday, April 21st. "Powerful Women, Important Collections" is based on her essay from the book "Diamonds Across Time: Facets of Mankind" and will include leading women of the 19th and 20th centuries, like Elizabeth Taylor, Doris Duke, Barbara Hutton, the Duchess of Windsor, and Queen Mary. Peltason says, "you'll see plenty of diamonds, but also emeralds and pearls and sapphires and great Burmese rubies. There will be crowns and tiaras, brooches and bracelets, stomachers [the best!], and some rings that are mini icebergs of heft and size" ... Link in bio for details!

𝐎𝐍𝐄 𝐈𝐍 𝐓𝐄𝐍 𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐒𝐀𝐍𝐃 : 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐔𝐍𝐈𝐐𝐔𝐄 𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐋𝐃 𝐎𝐅 𝐂𝐎𝐋𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐄𝐃 𝐃𝐈𝐀𝐌𝐎𝐍𝐃𝐒 ~ 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝐌. 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐠

In recent years, the gem and jewellery has used the phrase ‘one in ten thousand’ to indicate the extreme rarity of coloured diamonds. Along with this analogy comes the general assumption that mines typically process a ton of ore to recover just one carat’s worth of rough diamond. This ‘one-in-ten-thousand-stone’ could be of any depth of colour; those with strong, rich colours are rarer still. Even with all these ideas taking hold, widespread understanding of these magical stones has been a slow journey.
