TERRORISTIC THREATS IMPACTING URBANA HIGH SCHOOL & URBANA MIDDLE SCHOOL

On November 7, 2022, at about 7 AM, staff at UHS contacted The Urbana High School Police School Resource Officer concerning a threat from an unknown person who called the school’s office. The caller mentioned that he was going to kill students by shooting them at the high school. He also mentioned pipe bombs. Urbana Police Officers responded to the scene to make contact with school officials. Throughout the next hour, several additional calls were made by an unknown male and female caller from different numbers, with similar terroristic threats. Out of an abundance of caution, the decision was made to cancel classes at UMS and UHS for the day, pending verifying the validity of the threats and investigation. UHS was immediately put on lockdown. Students, staff and buses that were en route, were re-directed to the predetermined reunification site. During the course of the incident, police later learned that a message was also left on the voicemail of the middle school by an unknown offender with similar threats.

Law Enforcement Officials from Urbana Police, University of Illinois Police, Champaign County Sheriff’s Office and The Illinois Secretary of State Police all responded to assist in the evacuation of students. Explosive Detecting Canines and law enforcement officials are currently securing the schools. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and Urbana Police are working together to gather additional facts and investigate this issue further.

Urbana Police ask that anyone who has additional information or video footage of the incident please contact police at 217-384-2320. Arrangements can be made for information to be shared privately. Anyone wishing to remain anonymous may also submit tips to Crime Stoppers by phone at: 217-373-8477 (TIPS); online at 373tips.com; or the “P3 Tips” mobile app.

Citizens are reminded that information submitted to Crime Stoppers is completely anonymous. Calls are routed to a third-party national call center that receives your information, completes a tips information form, and then passes the information to the appropriate law enforcement agency. Caller ID tracking is
not utilized by Crime Stoppers and conversations are not recorded.

Crime Stoppers will pay cash rewards of $5,000 for tips that lead to an arrest in any homicide case, $2,500 for tips leading to an arrest in a felony crime involving a firearm, and up to $1,000 for tips leading to the arrest of the person(s) responsible for any other crime.

Goodbye, Columbus? Here's what Indigenous Peoples' Day means to Native Americans 11/10/2021

Today is Indigenous Peoples Day. For those of us in Urbana-Champaign, we should always be cognizant of the people whose land we now occupy - not just today, but every day. The tribes and their forced removal are name in the following land acknowledgment statement created by staff at the Native American House at the University of Illinois.

"I/We would like to begin today by recognizing and acknowledging that we are on the lands of the Peoria, Kaskaskia, Piankashaw, Wea, Miami, Mascoutin, Odawa, Sauk, Mesquaki, Kickapoo, Potawatomi, Ojibwe, and Chickasaw Nations. These lands were the traditional territory of these Native Nations prior to their forced removal; these lands continue to carry the stories of these Nations and their struggles for survival and identity.

As a land-grant institution, the University of Illinois has a particular responsibility to acknowledge the peoples of these lands, as well as the histories of dispossession that have allowed for the growth of this institution for the past 150 years. We are also obligated to reflect on and actively address these histories and the role that this university has played in shaping them. This acknowledgement and the centering of Native peoples is a start as we move forward for the next 150 years."

https://chancellor.illinois.edu/land_acknowledgement.html

Goodbye, Columbus? Here's what Indigenous Peoples' Day means to Native Americans A growing movement recasts Oct. 11 as a day to appreciate the diversity and history of Indigenous communities. That visibility, say Native Americans, can help us see what else needs to change.

Glad that no one was hurt in this incident. It's alarming to see the gun violence in our community continue to rise and to see this directed at the people who so often are the ones responding to people who are hurt by this violence.

City Council Meeting September 13, 2021 - 7:00pm | City of Urbana 12/09/2021

The City Council is set to vote on the new contract with the Fraternal Order of Police at this week’s meeting (https://www.urbanaillinois.us/node/9531). Council Members have been calling for a public presentation on this process since May and this information was finally provided last Monday.

Included in this discussion is a brief overview of the arbitration process that is required for law enforcement contract negotiation under state law. The related arbitration process for law enforcement discipline also greatly limits municipalities’ power to address misconduct. I encourage you to listen to the recording from last week’s Committee of the Whole meeting: https://youtu.be/I1VdfQUzGDo?t=6066 (starting around 3:36:07).

If you listen to Council Input & Communication at the end, you will also hear more regarding frustration related to this process, the general lack of progress on Council priorities, and the blatant disregard for the required public input and Council approval for alternate response models that was included in this year’s budget https://youtu.be/I1VdfQUzGDo?t=12596 (I state my concerns starting around 3:29:26).

Champaign County COVID-19 Vaccination Information - CUPHD 12/04/2021

Vaccine Availability Update from CUPHD!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District (CUPHD), in partnership with Carle Health, OSF HealthCare, Christie Clinic, Promise Healthcare, and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign will be hosting community-based COVID-19 vaccination clinics for anyone 16 years of age or older who has not yet received their first dose of the vaccine. It is important to note that while eligibility guidelines will include residents age 16 or older, each vaccination site may vary based on manufacturer’s approval. Moderna and Johnson & Johnson are currently available for individuals age 18 and older while Pfizer is available for those age 16 and older.
COVID-19 vaccination appointments are still limited and will remain in high demand until more supply becomes available. Vaccination clinics for the week of April 12, 2021 will be available by appointment only at the following locations:
Promise Healthcare, 819 Bloomington Road, Champaign.
To register:
• Call the COVID Care line at: (217) 403-5402.

• Those interested in receiving their vaccination at Kohl’s Plaza in Champaign should request to be notified of available appointments online at: https://tinyurl.com/CarleCCvax.
Pharmacies:
• Visit www.vaccinefinder.org for available COVID-19 vaccination appointments at local pharmacies.
Additional notes:
In most cases, you will receive your second dose where you received your first. Follow instructions on scheduling your second dose from the site.
Appointments are available on a first come, first served basis. There will not be a waitlist; however, additional appointments will be available next week based on vaccine availability.
You cannot receive the COVID vaccine if you have received any other vaccinations within 14 days prior to your appointment. You may be asked to show an ID for verification of employment.
Patients will need to wear a face covering, practice social distancing, and plan to allow at least 15 minutes for observation after the vaccination. Please limit the number of individuals in your party that are not receiving the vaccine and wear clothing to allow easy access to the upper portion of the arm for the injection.
The vaccine itself is free but providers may seek appropriate reimbursement from the recipient’s plan or program (e.g., private health insurance, Medicare, Medicaid) for a vaccine administration fee. You will not be turned away if you do not have insurance or charged the balance of the bill for the vaccine. If you have questions about your specific coverage, please call the number on the back of your insurance card.
The Illinois Department of Public Health has compiled a comprehensive list of frequently asked questions about the COVID-19 vaccination. Information can be found at: http://dph.illinois.gov/covid19/vaccine-faq.

Looks like it may be a while before the counting is finished. I appreciate the clarification offered in a comment that it is NORMAL and required for there to be a 2-week period after the election for mail in vote counting. According to the Champaign County Clerk's twitter page, the 83% that have been reported are everything except for, "the outstanding vote by mail and provisional ballots to be counted." We're on track. Just hang in there for the official results!
