Seun Kuti spends night in police custody, may be arraigned in court today
Seun Kuti spent the night in police custody on Monday night, May 15. The singer who turned himself in yesterday, was detained as police couldn't complete their investigation into allegations of assault leveled against him.
Seun was moved from the Lagos state police command headquarters in Ikeja to the State Criminal Investigation Department Yaba where he was interrogated into the night. He was then moved to a cell where he passed the night. Police sources told LIB that depending on the outcome of his interrogation today, he may be arraigned in court.
Recall that the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba Alkali, ordered the singer's arrest after a video of him slapping and pushing a police officer surfaced online.
It is illegal as it constitutes a violation of Section 5 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law- Seun Kuti's lawyer, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, faults police for taking singer's photos and placing a handcuff on him
Read his statement below
‘’Following his encounter with a policeman on the Third Mainland Bridge on Saturday the 13th May, 2023, my client, Mr. Seun Kuti reported himself in the office of the Commissioner of Police at the Police Command, Ikeja, at 8 am today Monday May 15, 2023.
I accompanied him to the Ikeja police station together with another lawyer, Mr. Femi Akinyemi from Falana and Falana chambers.
However, there was no interrogation as it was decided he would be moved to the Force Criminal Investigation Unit at Panti, Yaba. Before his movement, Mr. Seun Kuti, was handcuffed and his photograph was taken in the open by the Lagos PPRO, Mr. David Hundeyin who coordinated the parade and apparently shared the photograph of his parade in the media.
Mr. Kuti is presumed innocent until the contrary is proved by the State. Therefore, the decision of the police to subject him to the media parade violates section 9 of the Lagos State Administration of Criminal Justice Law, which has prohibited any form of parade of criminal suspects in Nigeria in Lagos State. The Police is supposed to enforce the Law, but prefers to disrespect and break it so casually and randomly. A Police institution that has no respect for the law it exists to enforce is not a good example to alleged law breakers.
The decision of the police to handcuff Mr. Kuti is equally illegal as it constitutes a violation of Section 5 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law.
After handcuffing him, the Police then drove him in a long convoy of heavily armed personnel from Ikeja to Panti Lagos, where he was again displayed for viewing to the men and officers of that police formation, and is currently held.
We await the next move of the Police on the misdemeanor alleged against Mr. Seun Kuti.''
Ayo Moses, manager of afrobeats star Seun Kuti has opened up on what transpired between his artiste and the police officer he slapped on Third Mainland Bridge.
Speaking to Vanguard Potpourri, Moses alleged that the police officer was drunk at the time of the incident and placed Kuti's family in danger by hitting their car with a police truck. He also accused the police officer of provoking Seun Kuti.
He said;
“On the said day, Seun was driving with his family on the third mainland bridge when he was suddenly hit from behind by a police truck being driven by an officer who was reportedly drunk.
“This act from the officer led Seun’s daughter into a sudden shock, as she was visibly shaken by the hit. So, this made Seun pursue the truck, double-crossed it and forced it to a stop. When the police officer got down from the truck, instead of apologising, he was arguing with Seun, which provoked him to slap the officer. People should realise that men in uniforms also provoke civilians. Immunity is no excuse for impunity.”

EFCC re-arrests Mompha on alleged N6bn money laundering
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday May 15 said that social media celebrity, Ismaila Mustapha (alias Mompha), charged with N6 billion money laundering has been re-arrested.
A statement from the commission says during a hearing on Mompha's case on June 10, 2022, it informed the court that Mompha was in possession of another passport aside from the one submitted to the court, as part of his bail conditions and that he had used same to travel from Ghana to Dubai on April 11, 2022 via Emirates Airlines in violation of the court order. Consequently, Justice DadaMo revoked the N25 million bail variation granted to Mompha and also issued a bench warrant for his arrest over his failure to appear in court.
The EFCC had also declared him wanted. The Commission says since June 16, 2022, Mompha absconded from the trial and that it continued with efforts to secure his arrest and appearance in court.
Following his continued absence in court and the inability of the prosecution as well as the defence to produce him in court, Justice Dada had, on September 22, 2022, ordered that the trial would continue in absentia.
At today's proceedings, the counsel for the EFCC, S.I. Suleiman, informed the court that the prosecution, in collaboration with its international partners, had secured the arrest of the defendant.
The EFCC counsel, Mr Suleiman Suleiman, told an Ikeja Special Offences Court that the prosecution in collaboration with its international partners had secured the arrest of Mompha.
“The prosecution will like to bring to the knowledge of my lord that in collaboration with our international partners, we have been able to apprehend the defendant. We plan to take him into custody and to produce him before the court.
The counsel for the defendant reached out to me seeking for an adjournment that he will be absent today in court,” Suleiman said.
Justice Mojisola Dada, thereafter, adjourned the case until July 3 for continuation of trial.
