Have you noticed that the word ‘podemos’ translates to ‘we can’ and ‘dije’ to “I said”. From this you can see that in Spanish we normally don’t use the personal pronoun.
Now that you’ve learned 9 weeks of most used words, you’ll start to notice little grammar differences like this more and more.

But it’s in Spanish, so definitely worth a go. 🤷

Why does Sandra react badly to Erik?
“Me gusta” is normally used to express like and dislikes. However, when you apply “me gusta” to people, it’s a little more complicated.. What Erik has actually said is that he fancies Sandra’s Mum. Not something you want to say to your girlfriend!
To express like in a friendly way, better use “me cae bien” or “me agrada”.

“Me gusta” normalmente se usa para expresar gusto o disgusto hacia algo. Sin embargo, cuando se usa para referirse a una persona es un poco más complicado. Lo que Erik ha dicho es que se siente atraído por la madre de Sandra. No es exactamente algo que quieras decir a tu novia.
Para expresar agrado a una persona siempre es mejor usar las expresiones “Me cae bien” o “Me agrada”.
Why does Sandra laugh when Erik gives his age?
The virgulilla (the ~ on top of the n) changes both the pronunciation and meaning of words in Spanish. “Ñ” and “n” are two completely different letters.
Erik wanted to say “tengo 25 años” which translates as I’m 25 years old. However, he left the virgulilla of the n, so what he actually said was I have 25 anuses.

Erik quería decir “tengo 25 años”, lo que significa “I’m 25 years old”. Sin embargo, olvidó usar la virgulilla y lo que dijo literalmente fue “I have 25 anuses”.

What’s gone wrong?
We often use “to be hot” in English when describing how we feel on a summer’s day . Literally translated into Spanish, you’ll get “estar caliente”. But in Spanish ‘estoy caliente’ means ‘I am horny’. 🙄
Next time better use “tengo calor” instead, which literally means “I have heat”.

Why is the empanada that Erik suggests illegal?
“Pollo” means “chicken”, but “polla” is frequently used in Spanish to say “pen*s”. Yes, indeed, ‘pen*s’.
Although empanadas typically have tasty ingredients, this one might be a bit too exotic….:-)
