Dance Ready Project
We are dance medicine professionals providing solutions for dancers.
Seeking medical attention promptly after an acute injury is essential to ensure proper assessment, treatment, and management.
In general, if you are unsure about the severity of an injury or if you have any concerns about the injured person's condition, it's better to err on the side of caution and seek medical attention. Prompt assessment and treatment can help prevent complications and facilitate a faster recovery.
Remember to hydrate frequently and take breaks in the shade to avoid heat exhaustion. Passion for dance should always be balanced with self-care.
Heat exhaustion can often go unnoticed, especially when awareness and education are lacking. Many dancers may not recognize the signs or understand the risks associated with overheating under the stage lights. Without proper education on hydration, pacing, and recognizing symptoms, performers may unknowingly push themselves too far.
By raising awareness and providing vital information on dancer health and safety, we can ensure every performance shines without sacrificing the well-being of our talented dancers.
As dancers captivate audiences with their moves, fluid loss becomes a real concern under the glaring lights. Replenishing lost fluids is essential to keep the rhythm flowing and the performance vibrant. Hydration isn't just a necessity; it's a dancer's lifeline.
Have you ever fainted from fluid loss after a performance? Share your experience in the comments.
Dazzling costumes and mesmerizing stage lighting add magic to every dance performance, but they also pose risks, including heat exhaustion for dancers. Underneath the spotlight, dancers exert themselves physically, and combined with the warmth generated by elaborate costumes and intense stage lighting, the risk of overheating increases significantly.
What kind of fabric have you found to be the best for your costumes? Share your thoughts in the comments!
Technical proficiency is a cornerstone of successful dance performance, and conditioning programs are instrumental in developing and maintaining the physical attributes necessary for dancers to achieve and sustain high levels of technical skill. These programs contribute to precision, control, endurance, injury prevention, and overall longevity in a dancer's career.
Wishing our IG family a joyous and safe holiday season!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our IG live series Day 3: What are people saying? Here are 3 key takeaways from our discussion!
1. There are still pervasive attitudes that do not acknowledge dancers as athletes, in and out of the dance community.
2. Education and collaboration is key in changing the attitudes and perceptions about dancer health and wellness.
3. We need communication and education between young dancers/dance parents as well as coordination with studios/companies and the medical/training team.
Special thank you to our guests Dr. Jeff Russell and Catherine & Rory Cullen from Carolina Dancer Wellness for sharing their stories on this topic! Be sure to join us again tomorrow at 7:30pm EST for our Day 4 topic: What Does the Future of Dancer Health Look Like? See you then!

Thank you to everyone who joined us!Here are a few key takeaways from our conversation!
1. Everyone! Dancers, choreographers, teachers, educators, artistic, therapists, and management all have their own roles to play.
2. Dancer health & wellness needs to be a budget line item. If you don't plan for it, it won't happen.
3. Choreographers and dance administrators must work with the artist in front of them, not the artist they wished they were or want them to be.
Special thank you to our guests Dion Wilson and Royce Zackery for taking the time to discuss this important issue! Donโt forget to tune in again today at 7:30pm EST for our Day 3 topic: What are People Saying? See you then!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our IG live series Day 1: Are Dancers Athletes and Is Dance a Sport? Here are some key takeaways from our conversation!
1. Artiste or athlete - you are both! The terms artist and athlete are not mutually exclusive. Dancers are artistic athletes and should be treated as such.
2. Dancers need to be acknowledged as athletes and dance as a sport because it opens the door to accessing needed resources that their sports counterparts already enjoy.
3. Dance culture needs a paradigm shift in understanding and prioritizing dancer health and wellness. Dance medicine research and education has evolved to meet these increasing demands.
Special thank you to Dr. Melody Hrubes and Dr. Leada Malek for contributing to this important topic! Be sure to tune in again tomorrow at 7:30pm EST to discuss the topic โWho is responsible for Dancerโs Health?โ

If youโre a dancer, there is I high chance that at some point you will get injured. And donโt be fooled, just because no-one around you is talking about it, doesnโt mean that it doesnโt happen!
In a 2022 study, yearly injury prevalence in pre-professional ballet dancers ranged from 32.1% to 67.4% across 5 years. Take a look around your studio, that means 1/3 to 2/3โs of the dancers around you will have an injury.
Thatโs a lot!!
But donโt freak out, there are things that you can do about it
You can
1. Work on avoiding injury
Or
2. Have a plan in place if you get injured.
Here are some things you can do today!
โก๏ธHave a consistent warm up and cool down routine.
โก๏ธPut in the time to condition your body
โก๏ธHave a plan for when things go wrong
Weโll talk more about all of these things more, as all of them deserve a deep dive to understand the doโs and donโts. After all , we want you to get keep dancing!
