On testing : I’ve made an explainer answering the most common questions I receive. This should help navigate uncertainties and calm fears that are associated with the present surge. Please share, and encourage individuals to test, isolate, and consult their doctors for treatment. https://bit.ly/3t3JMLs (pdf has links to relevant articles). Thanks, and for the help.

To help clinicians make sound evidence-based choices, we created this tip-sheet with a team lead by Dr. Madhukar Pai, Dr. Zain Chagla, Dr. Priya Sampathkumar and others. This sheet, amongst a host of other initiatives undertaken by professionals worldwide in supporting India’s fight against the virus can be accessed in multiple languages at https://www.indiacovidsos.org/

Thank you and for giving me a platform to disseminate sound and evidence-based knowledge. We need to treat COVID-19 with maturity, rather than panic, fear and sensationalism. Link in bio.

We have had two consecutive days of over a thousand new infections in Mumbai, the highest in over four months. The move to start the next phase is a good one, and we hope that the uptake of the vaccine is widespread and rapid. Speaking with Rupsa Chakraborty at Hindustan Times. Link in bio.

COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is the third leading cause of death in India. India ranks second in the world for the number of patients with the disease, and first for the number of deaths caused by the disease. The disease manifests in individuals above 40 years of age, with shortness of breath, a chronic cough, wheezing and production of sputum being some of the features. Despite being widely prevalent in India, knowledge about the disease is limited, and people tend to take their respiratory health much more lightly than their cardiac health. My thoughts in The Sunday Guardian, speaking with Sushmita Panda Link in Bio.

“A tale of two cities” : These are two photographs that I clicked 6 months apart (June 29th 2020 and January 9th, 2021) from the same place at a similar time of day. While it is heartening that the number of patients with COVID-19 disease might be on the decline, the air quality index (AQI) has definitely worsened as the lockdowns eased. The WHO estimates that 4.2 million deaths every year occur as a result of exposure to outdoor air pollution. I am no expert at finding a solution, but we need to be cognizant of the problem, and sensitize policymakers in every way possible that this isn't something that can be ignored. To put things in perspective, the recommeded AQI is less than 50.

Avian influenza, or bird flu is being reported in multiple states across the country. While there is absolutely no need to panic, it is prudent to take precautions and know more about the disease. My thoughts in this article by Arushi Bidhuri, The Heath Site

Sending children back to school in the midst of the pandemic is an emotional subject. I think we need to address this with science, and not fear or paranoia. Children tend to have a mild or asymptomatic disease, they are not necessarily efficient spreaders (data on this have been mixed) and they are likely to be harmed intellectually, socially and emotionally by a prolonged stay away from their peers. My thoughts, in this well researched article and in Link in bio

The importance of sleep cannot be emphasized enough, and one needs to make sure that the disruption in schedules that lockdowns and WFH have caused do not interfere with sleep. My comments on the importance of sleep in this article by Link in bio
