Can you believe April is over? I had the pleasure of mentoring four veterinarians last month!

First I visited Texas again and worked with two amazing vets - Dr. Burns and Dr. Longoria. Dr. Longoria is also an Auburn alum and started veterinary school right after I left - small world!

I saw the eclipse in a totality zone (had to pop outside really quick because we were in surgery!)

Then after returning to Alabama I worked with another great surgeon, Dr. Bost! She was a rock star and plans to share her new skills with her associate veterinarians at her practice in North Carolina.

Great times meeting great people ❤️

March was a great month! I hosted 1 veterinarian through my in-person mentorship and she was a rock star!! We focused on dog and cat spays and she did fantastic. Just look at her fabulous work! We reduced her surgery times by 50-75% and her confidence really blossomed 💪

I also met so many of you through my free virtual consultations. I’m so blessed to be booked up through August already. I love what I do!

January 2024 part 2!

Jumped over to Houston to participate in my second The Empty Shelter Project-Texas event and was so thrilled to find out that the surgeon next to me is a student of The Six Minute Spay! Dr. Lowe and I spayed and neutered over 100 cats between the two of us - and the entire team performed over 500 spays and neuters that day 😎

Dr. Lowe used The Six Minute Spay as a vital resource she moved out of corporate GP to work more in a shelter/rescue environment.

She also introduced me to another student who was in feline-only practice for years, and used The Six Minute Spay to become comfortable with dog spays again. 💪

I love that The Six Minute Spay connects me with such amazing veterinarians around the world. Such a dream!

January 2024 part 1!

Traveled back to Dallas to train veterinarians through Texas Coalition for Animal Protection 💪

Highlights from the week:

On day 1 one of the participants told me “I can’t do small incisions!” Her first surgery with me was a dog spay with a less than 1 inch incision 🤩

“This is a game changer. GAME CHANGER.”

“I want a bracelet that says What Would Dr. Long Do”

“Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for doing this.”

Had so much fun and taught my first left-handed surgeon! So proud of these two 🥰

Happy New Year!

One of my New Year's Resolutions for 2024 is to start offering something that has been requested of me many times: an In-Person training option. After months of designing, organizing, and using a "soft-launch" method with this program, I'm excited to announce that I am now offering In-Person Surgical Mentorship through The Six Minute Spay.

Some of the results of the veterinarians who have completed this program:

75% reduction in surgical time for all spays
86% reduction in incision length
35-45 procedures completed in the program
Earned a surgical day at their place of employment (General Practice)
Comfortable performing surgeries with little to no supervision
Mastered the modified Miller's knot, pedicle tie (autoligation), and appropriate incision placement
Completed a spay/neuter day at a local rescue and completed 30 procedures in 5 hours

Did I mention this program is approved for 25 hours of RACE CE?

All of the details can be found at my website: www.junelongdvm.com/services

Interested? Book a free consultation with me any time and we can chat about how we can work together.

Last month I had the great opportunity to work with some amazing people during Operation Sato: a joint effort between the Bissel Pet Foundation and The Sato Project. The project was completed in Garabo, Puerto Rico. Did you know that Puerto Rico alone has an estimated HALF A MILLION homeless pets, and even has a place called “dead dog beach”?

Through the efforts of many, we provided free spay/neuter, vaccines, microchips, and heartworm testing to 1,222 dogs over the course of 6 days👏🏻👏🏻

Overpopulation is such a huge problem all around the world. Consider working on a similar project to help animals and their communities!

It’s not just an online course.

Diving deep into the mission and purpose of The Six Minute Spay tonight as I continue to build out The Six Minute Spay online community.

There are multiple issues out there in the animals welfare and veterinary world and the true value of the course is how far the effects can spread.

Soon it won’t be just a course for you to watch alone and then hope for the best. It will be a community led course full of like-minded students and who are on the same path (or have been on the same path) as you!

So it’s been quiet around here lately…

I’ve been up to something! 👀

Over the past two years I’ve been listening great feedback from you all.

So things are going to be updated and improved soon!

Things like, more resources and support for you during your journey to become a more confident surgeon. More specifically joining a community of other professionals will similar goals. And you’ll get to see this face more (whether you like it or not)

So here I am, late at night in my pjs. Holed up in my office. With the baby monitor next to me. Building an online community for us!

How would you improve The Six Minute Spay? If you have an idea or suggestion please leave a comment or DM me.

Stay tuned for updates!

I started my veterinary career working with wild animals and large cats before getting into high-quality, high-volume spay-neuter (HQHVSN).

I changed trajectories because I realized I wanted to be closer to home.

I say this because any veterinary position you choose is relative to things beyond compensation.

If you like the satisfaction of Non-Profit Organizations and HQHVSN, then go for it!

Schedules for shelter medicine can be more sustainable, like 4 days a week of work, finishing at 3 p.m. every day, and weekends off...
..versus working at a General Practice 5 days a week or more with 12-hour days.

PLUS, no on-call in most cases!

Ultimately, if you're feeling burnout from compassion fatigue, there is no price for good mental health. 🧠

(Besides, shelter and HQHVSN positions are now offering much more competitive compensation. 😉)

What are some benefits you’ve experienced working at Non-Profit Organizations, Shelters, and Private Practices?

I remember getting all my clamps tangled using the 3 clamp method on ovarian pedicles and uterine bodies that I was taught in veterinary school.

Then having to untangle them, etc., which took more time away from finishing the procedure. ⌛

When I learned to only use one clamp with canine spays, and the pedicle tie in feline spays, it made surgeries sooo much easier and simpler.

I also grew confident in how efficient I became and how I could save my patient from overexposure and unnecessary anesthesia. 😻

When you learn that my fastest spay was 6 minutes, do you think of rushing or efficiency? ⏲️

I’ll be the first to say rushing is bad and that it leads to anxiety, forgetfulness, and dangerous mistakes.

However, I can also say when you become efficient, things move faster, and here’s why.

When you improve your current systems by changing even one detail, you build a new habit that becomes second nature.

For example, say you change the knot you use to tie off dog pedicles. Initially, tying a new knot may feel strange. 🪢

However, with practice and time, you start tying the new knot from pure muscle memory. (Side note: James Clear talks more about this in Atomic Habits, referencing a cat maze experiment, of all things 😸.)

When you first start a new technique or routine, you'll be slower at first - and this is normal!

Give yourself grace. Over time, your efficiency will increase exponentially after repeating the process.

Plus, you'll feel more confident because your surgeries will feel effortless.

What surgical habits have you changed to improve your surgical efficiency? What small changes do you want to make to support your surgical routine? 😃

Timeline photos 03/04/2023

What if you could learn to perform spay and neuter surgery more efficiently in the comfort of your general practice or shelter? 🏥

I've got news for you…

I’m taking The Six Minute Spay mentorship in person *anywhere* nationwide to vet professionals at general practices, HQHVSN hospitals, and shelters! 🎊

In-person training allows for one-on-one mentoring and supervising as you practice the techniques shared in The Six Minute Spay online course.

My promise is to:

If you’re a doctor, then naturally, you’re in control, right? 🤣🙏🏻 ← Me, laughing and wishing.

Although it may appear that way to people looking from the outside, being in control is a focused effort!

So, when we have days where we see more complicated cases, drop pedicles, or lose patients, I want to affirm that however out-of-control you feel, I applaud you for still taking care of patients every day.

To manage those feelings of chaos, here are a few things I do:

🌬 Breathe.
→ It refocuses my energy on something I can control. A simple inhale and exhale works, or you can try meditative breathing.

😴 Make sleeping and eating habits a priority.
→ Quality sleep and small frequent meals help me be a much more productive and pleasant person!

🚶♀️ Step away if possible.
→ Blowing a fuse around others will not help. You'll just spread the negativity around.

Most of all, be nice to yourself and give yourself some grace.

We’re human and understand control is not about doing everything perfectly, but instead is about having awareness and understanding of your ability (AKA the force!)

Happy and !

How do you gain control of your thoughts and actions when things feel chaotic?

“How do things work at high-volume spay/neuter clinics?”

I was asked this question during a podcast interview and felt it was important to share how surgical efficiency starts before the first patient arrives.

Some things that we emphasize are:

👩🏻 How we’re staffed.
📋 How each staff member focuses on a small number of tasks.
👀 And how we monitor our patients as they recover.

Every clinic is different and should operate in a way that’s safe, comfortable, and efficient.

Because of the veterinary professional shortage, it’s important to recognize and acknowledge what’s realistic for you and your team, so you don’t run into further complications or burnout.

How is your surgical suite setup? What helps you create efficiency and flow?

"I never lose. Either I win, or I learn."
- Nelson Mandela 😁

This is one of my favorite quotes because it makes me feel confident about surgical complications and the lesson behind them.

Hoping for and completing a smooth surgery is amazing, but not expecting and completing a complicated surgery is an even bigger testament to your ability and skill as a veterinary surgeon.

The truth is not everyone can do what veterinary professionals do.

So, for us to be looked at and trusted as the person to care for so many cats and dogs is humbling, especially when we can work through spay and neuter complications, come back, and do it again! 🤩

Embrace the complications and empower yourself with more knowledge on efficient spay/neuter surgery through the 6 Minute Spay course. → https://www.6minutespay.com/

Being an HQHVSN surgeon has allowed me to balance my life mentally, physically, and emotionally in this tough industry we all love.

Being an HQHVSN surgeon means I don’t have to sacrifice my personal life or the mission to get the overpopulation of cats and dogs under control.

Being an HQHVSN surgeon means I don’t suffer from compassion fatigue and burnout.

I know it’s tough right now, but I truly believe this is an opportunity for vet professionals to save ourselves and still remain passionate about our promise to care for pets.

Go for what you imagined being a veterinary professional would be and feel like and consider learning high-volume techniques.

What other things do you do as a vet professional to be efficient and take care of yourself?
