Recent studies estimate that we use an astounding 129 billion face masks globally every month – that is 3 million a minute.

3.4 billion face masks or face shields are discarded every day. China, with the world’s largest population (1.4 billion) discards nearly 702 million face masks daily.

According to a 2020 OceansAsia Report, an estimated 1.56 billion masks will have entered oceans in 2020, resulting in an additional 4.680 to 6,240 metric tonnes of marine plastic pollution.

Disposable masks take as long as 450 years to break down, slowly turning into micro plastics while negatively impacting marine wildlife and ecosystems.
