Battery monitoring in an off-grid electrical system is one of the most important aspects, since energy from the batteries is supposed to make up for the hours where no charging from the sun is available.

There is various ways and technologies of determining and monitoring battery charging/discharging, but by far the most precise method is using a shunt.

Sizing a solar charge-controller is usually done after the battery-bank voltage, and capacity is determined. It is also neccesary to size the controller so that it can handle incoming voltage. 💡

VRM is the cloud based Victron Remote Management system that can be used for monitoring real-time as well as historical graphs and data. ☁️

Using a monitoring system like this can help to understand how well a system is performing, if the batteries are being used good, if the solar panels are performing as expected, and much more. ⚡️🔋☀️

The VRM cloud platform is free to use, and compatible with all Victron GX devices such as the Color Control GX, and Venus GX. Whether the system is on a boat, in a mountain cabin, or in a camper van. as long as the system can communicate and update using the internet, the VRM will give access to all the necessary data.

In times when internet is abcent, no need to worry, you can always monitor the system nearby, using the Victron Connect mobile app. 📲

Need to figure out a wire size to use?

Check out the 𝘾𝙞𝙧𝙘𝙪𝙞𝙩 𝙒𝙞𝙯𝙖𝙧𝙙 app, by Blue Sea Systems.

So, for example, say you need to find out the wire size to use for the battery cable coming from your charge controller.

Open up the app and choose Calculate Wire Size.

Enter your system information.

Example:

1. Voltage:
We have a 12 volt battery-bank.

2. Load Current:
Charge controller max output amperage is known to be 70 amps.

3. Length of Conductor:
The wire length is 13 feet.

4. Allowed Voltage Drop:
You’re always aiming at a minimal voltage drop.

5. Insulation Temp. Rating:
Wire insulation rating from the manufacturer. 80 degrees celsius is a common value.

6. Installed in Engine Room?
No, the wire is not routed close to the engine.

7. Wires in Bundle:
It is just a single wire, not near other wires.

8. Duration:
6 hours of charging from the sun, = 360 minutes
(Use longest duration scenaria for your system.)

9. Terminated on Fuse:
Yes, there will be a fuse terminated to this wire.

Hit Calculate

Result:
Recommended minimum wire size of 4, in the “american wire gauge” (awg) scale. Or 16 square millimeters in the ISO Metric scale.

This is the minimum wire size recommendation, which means you can use a larger wire size if you have that available. Using a smaller wire size may result in heat and inefficiency.
