I wanted to share this photo that Charlie Buhler took of Sarah Kay and me. Sarah visited with me as part of research she is doing on her grandmother, June Suzuki, who was one of my school teachers.
I was one of the “little girls” at St. Mary’s School for Indian Girls in Springfield, South Dakota. It was an Episcopal school for girls from Tribes in the Dakotas, Nebraska and Iowa. Most of the teachers were from New England who came as missionaries to St. Mary’s.
One teacher was June Suzuki, a Japanese American. We didn’t think it unusual to have a Japanese teacher and I remember her telling how her parents had come from Japan in the 1930s.
Miss Suzuki was at a New England college when her parents and other Japanese were moved to internment camps during World War II. She told of how soldiers came to their home and told them to leave. They were suspected of espionage for Japan. They only took what they could carry--leaving all else behind--even vacating the house they owned. They were loaded in trucks and hauled to Nevada.
“I didn’t know of this for several months and it was time for me to graduate and go home. But I couldn’t – I had no home.” I remember her telling us. Members the Episcopal church did not want her to go to the camp, so they vouched for her loyalty to the United States and arranged for her to teach at St. Mary’s.
I was appalled by the treatment of her family and other Japanese Americans. How could the government treat people like this--take them away from their homes and moved they to a strange place?
She looked at me with a sad smile and said, “What do you think reservations are?”
I was a little girl, unaware of how badly my people had been treated and I was stunned, but Miss Suzuki made me aware of wrongs and stirred my curiosity to learn more about American Indians of all tribes.
